“If you obey the laws of nature, respect them, and do not go against them, then nature is safe from you – and you are safe from nature.”

These profound words from Khushboo Upadhyay reflect not only her deep respect for the natural world but also the essence of her journey. What began nearly 14 years ago as an aspiration to join the civil services has evolved into a deep commitment to wildlife conservation – a path that now symbolically places her as a guardian and nurturer of the wild.

In a world where determination meets dedication, Khushboo, a courageous daughter of Uttar Pradesh, has shown that with clear vision and tireless effort, even the wildest dreams can come true. Today, as a Regional Forest Officer in the Hastinapur Forest Area, Meerut, she inspires countless young minds -especially women – to pursue their passion and purpose.

Her journey toward joining the civil services began in 2011. She initially appeared for several UPSC and state civil service exams before finally achieving success. Khushboo, a 2017 batch SPS officer of UP PCS, has successfully rescued 18 leopards during her tenure in the Forest Department – earning her the nickname “Tiger Woman.” Each of these rescues carries its own unique story and stands as a poignant example of courage and compassion.

Indian Masterminds recently interviewed her to learn more about her journey and rescue operations.

FROM TRAINING TO THE WILD

She joined the UP Forest Department in 2021 and was then sent to Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, for training. After 1.5 years of training, she returned to UP for field attachment (posting) in their respective divisions. In June 2023, she received her first official posting at the Amangarh Tiger Reserve. As a Forest Range Officer, the entire area was under her supervision, marking the beginning of her deeper journey into understanding wildlife.

The reserve borders Uttarakhand, and wildlife frequently moves between the forests of the two states. Khushboo observed and resolved many inter-state issues related to this movement.

She notes that there is a significant leopard problem in Bijnor, leading to frequent human-wildlife conflicts, which posed a considerable challenge for her to manage. Due to her posting in the Tiger Reserve, she handled most of these cases and was even called upon by other ranges, as people believed officers from Tiger Reserves were better equipped to handle such situations. This is likely why many rescues attributed to her also took place in other ranges.

She is also the first woman Forest Range Officer in Uttar Pradesh to be posted in a Tiger Reserve.

FROM AYODHYA TO THE HEART OF THE FOREST

Born and raised in the sacred city of Ayodhya, Khushboo’s early life was surrounded by nature’s beauty. Her love for the environment was not just a passing interest – it became her calling. Though her journey began with a highly respected post as Assistant Central Intelligence Officer (JR-1) in the Intelligence Bureau, her heart longed for the wilderness.

In 2017, she took the plunge, appeared for the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) exam, and cleared it with determination. By 2021, she joined the Forest Department, ready to make her mark in an entirely new world.

BREAKING BARRIERS IN THE WILD

Khushboo didn’t just join the department – she made history. She became the first woman officer in Uttar Pradesh to be appointed as the Area Officer of Amangarh Tiger Reserve, a landmark achievement that opened doors for many aspiring women in the field of forest services.

In a male-dominated domain, Khushboo’s appointment shattered stereotypes and proved that strength lies not in physical power, but in mental resilience, emotional intelligence, and unwavering commitment.

GUARDIAN OF THE WILD: 18 LEOPARDS RESCUED

Her work on the ground is nothing short of extraordinary. During her time in Amangarh, Khushboo successfully rescued 18 leopards, each rescue operation a testament to her courage and expertise.

One rescue, in particular, left a lifelong impression on her. Her team discovered a tiny leopard cub abandoned for four days. With no sign of the mother returning, they nurtured it using ‘kitten formula’ over five stressful days. Then came the reward: footage from a camera trap showing the mother returning to reclaim her cub.

As a mother herself, Khushboo said, “That was the most pleasant feeling of my career so far.” It was not just a success story – it was a moment of connection between humanity and the wild, a bond built on trust and love.

NATURE: NOT JUST A JOB, BUT A CALLING

To Khushboo, working in the forest is more than a profession – it’s a soul-satisfying experience. She often shares how animals in the wild never attacked her or her team, saying, “It seems as if they understand us – that we have come to help them.”

This sense of mutual respect and harmony reflects her approach: she doesn’t conquer nature, she coexists with it.

A MESSAGE FOR THE YOUTH

Khushboo’s story is a living example of what clarity, hard work, and passion can achieve. She shares a powerful message for the youth:

“If your goal is clear and your efforts are sincere, nothing can stop you.”

She urges young people, especially girls, to pursue their dreams in any field—be it environment, forests, or elsewhere – with full dedication and confidence. Her life shows that no dream is too big and no path too difficult if one walks it with heart and perseverance.

A BEACON FOR THE FUTURE

Khushboo is not just a forest officer – she is a symbol of courage, dedication, and inspiration. Her story is a reminder that success comes to those who not only dream big but also walk the path with humility, strength, and purpose.

In every rescued cub, every protected tree, and every girl she inspires, Khushboo leaves behind a legacy that the future will remember.
