First timer Chandrajyoti Singh tasted success in her maiden UPSC Civil Services Examination attempt, making her army parents proud. At a young age, she was able to fulfil her dream and her parents’ wish by securing a top spot in the UPSC CSE 2019, that of AIR 28.
An IAS officer posted as SDM in Mohali now, Ms. Singh shared her inspiring journey to the prestigious service with Indian Masterminds.
BACKGROUND
From her early years, Ms. Singh’s aspirations were deeply rooted in a desire to contribute meaningfully to her nation, a sentiment instilled by her family’s army background. Raised in various places of North India due to her parents’ postings, she completed her 10th in Jalandhar, 12th in Chandigarh, and pursued a degree in History Honors at St. Stephen’s College in Delhi, graduating in 2018.
“I opted for a deliberate gap year and embarked on my UPSC CSE preparation in 2019,” Ms. Singh told Indian Masterminds.
PREPARATION
Her preparation strategy reflects meticulous planning and dedication. Ms. Singh thoroughly analysed the exam syllabus and previous years’ question papers, crafting a comprehensive plan for both the General Studies (GS) paper and the mains examinations. With equal attention devoted to her optional subject, she aimed at completing the syllabus well before the prelims, allowing ample time for extensive revision.
Recognizing the paramount importance of practice, she went for numerous mock tests for both prelims and mains, paying particular attention to refining her answer-writing skills.
PT ROUND
As she approached the personality test phase, Ms. Singh delved into a detailed review of her Detailed Application Form (DAF), mastering every term mentioned. Current affairs, her graduation subject (History), and her optional subject received dedicated focus, supplemented by the frequent engaging in mock interview sessions.
WISE WORDS
Reflecting on her achievement, Ms. Singh shared about the joy her parents felt, underscoring the recognition of the hard work invested in her success.
Offering valuable advice to aspiring candidates, she said, “Hard work is best complimented by smart work. So, work smart! Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. If you work hard and smart, success is guaranteed for you.”
NATION BUILDING
Prior to assuming her current role as SDM in Mohali, Ms. Singh served in Sultanpur, where she was confronted with the unique challenge of managing floods. Collaborating with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the army, she orchestrated effective evacuation efforts while ensuring the provision of essential items such as ration and drinking water.
Now stationed in Mohali, she said that “it is a burgeoning town with significant real estate activity”. She envisions leveraging her expertise to contribute meaningfully to revenue and education, fostering the town’s continued growth.
