1990 batch IPS officer Shankar Jiwal has been named as the new chief of the Tamil Nadu Police. He is currently serving as Chennai City Police Commissioner. Mr. Jiwal will assume office on July 1, after DGP C Sylendra Babu, an IPS officer of 1987 batch, retires on June 30.
Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary V Irai Anbu on Friday issued the order appointing Mr. Jiwal as the chief of the state police.
Mr. Jiwal has worked in various positions in his 30 years of police career. He is a native of Uttarakhand. In 1993, he was posted as the ASP of Mannargudi, and in 1995, he became the SP of Salem district. The very next year, he was made the Aide-De-Camp (ADC) to the then governor of TN.
He has served as South Regional Director of Narcotics Control Bureau on central deputation. He has also been the IGP of Internal Security. He has been instrumental in setting up the Organized Crime Intelligence Unit in Tamil Nadu and equipping the state intelligence apparatus with advanced surveillance tools.
In 1999, he was the SP of Madurai district, and in 2000, he became the SP, Zonal Director, NCB, Chennai. In 2004, he was made the DIG/CoP, Trichy city. From there he came to Chennai in 2008 as DIG, Intelligence-II. In 2011, he was made the IGP of Intelligence. As IGP, he was sent to Special Task Force in Erode the same year. In 2015, he was made the ADGP of the Special Task Force. He was made the DGP/CoP, of Greater Chennai Police in 2021
He was awarded the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in the year 2019. Soon after the DMK came to power in May 2021, he was appointed as the Police Commissioner of Chennai.
Meanwhile, Sandeep Rai Rathore, a 1992-batch IPS officer who was DGP/Director, Training, Tamil Nadu, has been posted as the new Commissioner of Greater Chennai Police.
