New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a two-year extension in the deputation tenure of two senior IPS officers serving as Joint Directors in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The extensions granted to Ghanshyam Upadhyay and Rajiv Ranjan will take their total tenure in the premier investigating agency to seven years each.
The decision was formalised through an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on May 6, 2026.
Ghanshyam Upadhyay’s Tenure Extended Till June 2028
According to the order, the tenure of Ghanshyam Upadhyay, a 1999-batch IPS officer of the Odisha cadre, has been extended from June 30, 2026 to June 29, 2028.
Currently serving as Joint Director in the CBI, Upadhyay heads the agency’s Economic Offences (EO) Zone and is known for his expertise in handling complex economic offences, anti-corruption investigations, and financial fraud cases.
Career Highlights of Ghanshyam Upadhyay
Before joining the CBI as Joint Director in November 2021, Upadhyay served in several important positions:
- Inspector General (IG), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)
- IG, Economic Offences Wing (EOW), Odisha Police
- IG, Special Task Force (STF), Odisha Police
He was promoted to the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) in December 2023 while on central deputation.

A 2005-batch IPS officer of the Sikkim cadre, Ranjan currently serves in a key leadership role within the agency and has handled several high-profile investigations.
