Patna: The Bihar government has approved the construction of two new greenfield airports in Sonpur (Saran district) and Sultanganj (Bhagalpur district). The decision marks a major step toward improving air connectivity and regional development across the state.

A total investment of around ₹5,159 crore has been sanctioned for both projects, along with large-scale land acquisition to support development.

Sonpur Greenfield Airport Details

The proposed airport in Sonpur will be developed on approximately 4,228 acres of land. The project has been allocated ₹1,302.82 crore for construction and development.

Located close to Patna, the new airport is expected to significantly reduce pressure on the existing Patna airport. It will also improve air travel convenience for passengers from nearby districts, saving both time and travel distance.

Sultanganj Greenfield Airport Details

The second airport will be developed in Sultanganj (Ajgaibinath area) in Bhagalpur district. Around 931 acres of land will be acquired for this project, with an approved budget of ₹4,072 crore.

This airport is expected to benefit eastern Bihar as well as nearby regions of Jharkhand by improving regional air access and connectivity.

Boost to Religious and Regional Tourism

The Sultanganj airport is expected to play a key role in promoting religious tourism, especially for devotees traveling for the Kanwar Yatra and visits to nearby pilgrimage destinations.

It may also benefit pilgrims traveling to Deoghar, making travel more convenient and accessible during peak religious seasons.

Economic Growth and Employment Opportunities

The government has stated that both airport projects will generate significant employment opportunities during construction and operational phases.

Local industries such as transport, hospitality, retail, and small businesses are also expected to benefit. The projects are likely to strengthen the regional economy and accelerate infrastructure development in surrounding areas.

Impact on Connectivity and Development

Once completed, the two greenfield airports are expected to transform Bihar’s aviation landscape. They will improve regional connectivity, reduce travel burden on existing airports, and support long-term economic growth across multiple districts.
