Patna: Bihar has made significant progress in expanding rural road connectivity, with 1,21,675 habitations now linked through paved roads. The state has also completed more than 1,20,948 km of rural roads, strengthening year-round connectivity in remote and underserved areas.
The Rural Works Department is continuing construction to connect the remaining habitations and improve access to essential services across rural Bihar.
1.29 Lakh Habitations Covered Under Target
The state has set a broader target of connecting 1,29,990 habitations through a planned network of 1,34,704.13 km of paved rural roads.
With 1,21,675 habitations already connected, work is now progressing on the remaining 8,780 habitations. The focus is particularly on settlements that still lack reliable all-weather road connectivity.

Fresh Road Construction Target for 2026-27
The department has continued to expand the programme during the current financial year.
For 2026-27, Bihar has set a target of connecting 3,161 habitations through approximately 9,264.54 km of new rural roads. Construction and implementation of projects are being accelerated to meet the target.
Road expansion is being carried out through schemes including the Mukhyamantri Gram Sampark Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.
Better Connectivity Beyond Transportation
The rural road programme is expected to have an impact beyond easier travel. Reliable road links can help residents reach schools, healthcare centres, markets and other essential services more quickly.
For farmers and small businesses, improved connectivity can also make it easier to transport agricultural produce and other goods to nearby markets.
The expansion of the network is therefore aimed at supporting wider rural development while reducing the isolation of habitations that previously lacked dependable road access.
Focus on All-Weather Rural Connectivity
The Rural Works Department is prioritising habitations that remain without permanent road links. By connecting these areas with paved, all-weather roads, the state aims to create more dependable links between villages and major road networks.
With more than 1.21 lakh habitations already connected, the next phase will focus on completing the remaining targets and expanding the network further during 2026-27.
