New Delhi: The Ministry of Coal convened a high-level Stakeholder Consultation on ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat: Coal for Energy Security’ and simultaneously launched the 15th round of Commercial Coal Mine Auctions, marking a significant step toward boosting domestic coal production and reinforcing India’s energy self-reliance.
15th Round of Commercial Coal Mine Auctions
The 15th auction round includes 11 coal blocks, comprising 7 fully explored and 4 partially explored mines. Of these, 3 mines are offered under the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act, 2015 (CMSP) and 8 under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 (MMDR).
The auctioned blocks include:
- 1 coking coal block
- 10 non-coking coal blocks
These mines are located across Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana, and are expected to attract substantial investment, increase domestic coal availability, and generate employment opportunities.
So far, the Ministry has successfully auctioned 135 coal mines across 13 rounds, with a Peak Rated Capacity (PRC) of 325 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).

Focus on Reforms, Technology, and Sustainability
Vikram Dev Dutt, Secretary, Ministry of Coal, highlighted the transformative impact of coal sector reforms introduced since 2020, emphasizing:
- Enhanced transparency and efficiency
- Increased private sector participation
- Strengthened domestic coal supply chains
He also emphasized the importance of:
- Scientific mine closure and ecological restoration
- Community welfare and CSR initiatives in coal regions
- Adoption of coal gasification technologies, including Underground Coal Gasification (UCG)
Smt Rupinder Brar, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Coal, called for accelerated coal production that balances growth with environmental stewardship. She highlighted the role of policy stability, innovation, and collaboration in attracting investments and promoting sustainable mining practices.
