New Delhi: HAWK AESA radar programme has reached an important stage as Data Patterns India Limited works to integrate its indigenous radar system with the Indian Air Force’s MiG-29 and Su-30MKI fighter aircraft. The company has confirmed that the radar hardware is complete and built to global standards, but software integration remains the key challenge before flight testing and certification can begin. To overcome this hurdle, Data Patterns is engaging with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russian aircraft manufacturers for technical support.

The development is part of India’s broader effort to strengthen indigenous defence capabilities under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and reduce dependence on imported military technologies.

What Is the HAWK AESA Radar

The HAWK radar is an indigenous Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar being developed by Data Patterns for integration into Indian Air Force fighter aircraft.

AESA radars are considered among the most advanced radar technologies in the world. They offer better target detection, improved tracking, electronic warfare capabilities, and enhanced reliability compared to conventional mechanically scanned radars.

According to company statements during its FY2026-27 first-quarter financial briefing, the radar’s hardware development has been completed and includes advanced Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology.

HAWK AESA Radar Project: What are the Main Challenge

While the radar hardware is ready, integrating the system with the onboard computers and avionics of the MiG-29 and Su-30MKI remains a complex task.

The company had originally planned to obtain critical software support from a third-party supplier. However, that arrangement did not materialise, forcing Data Patterns to explore alternative solutions. As a result, the company is now working with multiple stakeholders to complete the integration process.

DRDO and Russian OEMs Brought Into Discussions

Data Patterns has initiated discussions with DRDO to seek technical assistance for software integration and system validation.

At the same time, the company has approached the original Russian manufacturers of the MiG-29 and Su-30 aircraft to gain access to specialised expertise required for seamless radar integration.

These discussions are aimed at ensuring that the radar can communicate effectively with the aircraft’s existing systems without affecting operational performance.

Why Integration Is So Important

Modern fighter aircraft rely on highly interconnected avionics systems..Even if a radar performs well independently, it must be fully compatible with mission computers, weapons systems, displays, navigation systems, and communication equipment before it can be certified for operational use. This makes software integration one of the most critical phases of any fighter aircraft upgrade programme.

HAWK AESA Radar Project: UAV Testing Helps Reduce Risk

To accelerate development, Data Patterns is conducting preliminary testing using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).

Testing on UAV platforms allows engineers to validate radar performance, software architecture, and operational reliability before moving to more complex fighter aircraft integration. This approach reduces technical risk and provides valuable performance data in real-world conditions.

New Generation HAWK Radar Also Under Development

Alongside the current programme, Data Patterns is reportedly developing a next-generation version of the HAWK radar family. The company plans to focus on manufacturing readiness and system maturity over the coming months so it can respond quickly when large-scale procurement opportunities emerge.

This strategy reflects a shift from being primarily a hardware supplier to becoming a complete radar solutions provider.

Boost for India’s Defence Self-Reliance Goals

The HAWK AESA radar project aligns with India’s long-term objective of building indigenous defence technologies.

Successful integration of the radar into frontline fighter aircraft would strengthen India’s domestic aerospace ecosystem and reduce reliance on foreign radar suppliers. It would also demonstrate the growing capabilities of Indian private-sector defence companies in developing advanced military electronics.
