New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has signed its first high-value deep tech project agreement with startup Zero mK India Private Limited for the indigenous development of a 20 milliKelvin (mK) Dilution Refrigerator for Quantum Applications.
According to the official Ministry of Defence release, the project aims to strengthen India’s capabilities in quantum technology, advanced cryogenics, and strategic research.
What Is The DRDO 20 mK Dilution Refrigerator Project
The agreement was signed under the Technology Development Fund (TDF) Scheme, a Ministry of Defence initiative that supports innovation by Indian industries and startups.

The project has been awarded to Zero mK India Private Limited, based in Alwar, Rajasthan. The agreement was signed in New Delhi between the Director of TDF and representatives of the startup.
This is the first high-value project approved under the recently launched ₹500 crore TDF deep-tech corpus, which was sanctioned by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to support cutting-edge technologies.
What Is A Dilution Refrigerator
A dilution refrigerator is a highly specialized cryogenic system capable of producing extremely low temperatures measured in milliKelvin. For comparison, one milliKelvin is one-thousandth of a degree above absolute zero, making it one of the coldest environments that can be created on Earth.
Why Is It Important
These ultra-low temperatures are essential for operating and testing quantum computing systems. Quantum processors, sensors, and several advanced scientific instruments require such environments to function accurately and reliably.
How Will DRDO 20 mK Dilution Refrigerator Project Benefit India
The indigenous development of a 20 mK-class dilution refrigerator aligns closely with India’s National Quantum Mission. It will help create critical infrastructure required for future quantum computing and quantum communication systems.
Reducing Import Dependence
Currently, advanced cryogenic systems are largely imported from foreign suppliers. Developing this technology within India will reduce external dependence and strengthen technological self-reliance.
Strengthening Strategic Capabilities
Quantum technologies are increasingly becoming important for defence, cybersecurity, communications, and advanced scientific research. The project is expected to improve India’s long-term strategic and technological capabilities.
What Is The Technology Development Fund Scheme
The Technology Development Fund is designed to encourage Indian industries, startups, and MSMEs to develop defence technologies.
The scheme supports innovation in areas that are important for national security and future defence requirements.
Focus On Emerging Technologies
The newly created ₹500 crore corpus focuses on deep-tech sectors such as:
- Quantum Technology
- Artificial Intelligence
- Advanced Materials
- Cybersecurity
- Semiconductor Technologies
- Strategic Electronics
Statements From Defence Leadership
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the startup, and all stakeholders associated with the project. He expressed confidence that the partnership would create a strong model for future DRDO-industry collaborations in emerging technology sectors.
DRDO Leadership’s View
Defence Secretary and DRDO Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh also congratulated the teams involved and wished them success in achieving the project’s objectives. Senior officials from DRDO’s technology management and cyber security divisions were present during the signing ceremony.
Why This Project Matters For India’s Future
The project will help create a domestic ecosystem for quantum research and development. It will also support universities, research institutions, startups, and industries working in advanced computing technologies.
Advancing Atmanirbhar Bharat
The initiative supports the government’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by promoting indigenous innovation in critical technologies. Developing such sophisticated cryogenic systems within India is expected to strengthen the country’s technological independence.
