New Delhi: Netra Mk1A AEW&C is set to become a major upgrade for the Indian Air Force (IAF) as Brazilian aerospace company Embraer has proposed its advanced Praetor 600 business jet as the platform for six new airborne early warning and control aircraft. The proposal aims to improve India’s aerial surveillance capabilities with longer range, higher operating altitude, and greater mission endurance.

The move comes as India plans to expand its indigenous Netra airborne surveillance fleet beyond the three existing Netra Mk1 aircraft currently in service. The Netra system, developed by DRDO, acts as an airborne radar station that can detect and track enemy aircraft and other threats from long distances.

What Is the Netra Mk1A AEW&C Aircraft

Netra Mk1A is the next-generation version of India’s indigenous Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system. These aircraft help the Air Force by:

  • Detecting enemy aircraft from long distances
  • Monitoring airspace in real time
  • Guiding fighter jets during combat
  • Improving battlefield awareness
  • Supporting network-centric warfare operations

India currently operates three Netra Mk1 aircraft based on the Embraer ERJ-145 platform. The Indian Air Force plans to add six more advanced Netra Mk1A aircraft to strengthen its surveillance network.

Why Is Embraer Offering the Praetor 600?

According to reports, Embraer has proposed the Praetor 600 because it provides significant performance improvements compared to the older ERJ-145 platform used by current Netra aircraft. Some of the major advantages include:

Longer Flight Range

The Praetor 600 offers a range of around 4,018 nautical miles (7,441 km). This is much greater than the ERJ-145 platform, allowing the aircraft to stay on missions longer and monitor larger areas without refueling.

Higher Operating Altitude

The aircraft can fly at approximately 45,000 feet, higher than the ERJ-145’s operating ceiling. Flying higher helps radar systems see farther and improves surveillance coverage.

Better Endurance

With larger fuel capacity and improved efficiency, the Praetor 600 can remain airborne for longer periods. This means fewer aircraft are needed to maintain continuous monitoring over strategic regions such as the Indian Ocean and northern borders.

Improved Operational Flexibility

The aircraft’s modern design and higher speed could allow faster deployment to critical areas during emergencies or military operations.

What is the Importance of the Netra Mk1A AEW&C Aircraft for India

The Indian Air Force is working to expand its airborne surveillance capabilities amid growing regional security challenges.

AEW&C aircraft are often called “eyes in the sky” because they provide early warning of incoming threats and help coordinate military responses. India’s indigenous Netra program recently moved closer to achieving full operational maturity, with final operational clearance scheduled for June 2026.

The addition of six new Netra Mk1A aircraft would significantly increase India’s ability to monitor large airspaces and improve coordination between fighter aircraft, ground stations, and other military assets.

What is the importance of Netra Mk1A AEW&C Aircraft Praetor 600 Platform Integration

The Netra Mk1A program is important for India’s defense modernization plans. If selected, the Praetor 600 platform could provide:

  • Greater surveillance coverage
  • Longer mission duration
  • Better radar performance
  • Faster response capability
  • Improved monitoring of strategic regions

These advantages would help strengthen the Indian Air Force’s airborne warning and control network and enhance national security.
