New Delhi: The GRSE Next Generation Corvette Project is moving closer to a major milestone as Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) awaits final approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for the Indian Navy’s ambitious ₹40,000 crore warship programme.
The project involves the construction of eight advanced Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs) equipped with Extended Range BrahMos missiles, modern sensors, and anti-submarine warfare systems. If approved, it will become one of India’s most important indigenous naval shipbuilding projects.
What Is the GRSE Next Generation Corvette Project
The Indian Navy plans to induct eight Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs) to strengthen its surface warfare and maritime strike capabilities.
Key Highlights
- Total project value: Nearly ₹40,000 crore
- Total ships planned: 8
- GRSE is expected to build 5 corvettes
- Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) is expected to build 3 corvettes
- Final approval from CCS is still pending
- The programme was earlier cleared by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) and is now awaiting the final government nod.
Why GRSE Next Generation Corvette Project Matters
The Indian Navy is currently modernising its fleet to address growing security challenges in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
The NGC programme is designed around the concept of “distributed lethality“, meaning smaller warships can carry powerful weapons and independently deliver significant combat capability.
This approach offers:
- Greater operational flexibility
- Better survivability during conflict
- Enhanced strike capability
- Faster deployment across multiple maritime sectors
Defence planners believe such ships can play a critical role in future naval warfare where mobility, stealth and long-range precision strikes are becoming increasingly important.
Expected Specifications of the GRSE Next Generation Corvette Project
According to available project details, the ships will feature advanced indigenous and imported systems.
Platform Characteristics
- Displacement: Around 3,500 tonnes
- Endurance: Approximately 30 days
- Top speed: Nearly 32 knots
- Designed for high mobility and extended deployments
- Advanced stealth features to reduce radar and infrared signatures
Powerful BrahMos Strike Capability
One of the biggest highlights of the programme is the integration of Extended Range BrahMos cruise missiles.
Weapon Package
- 8 Extended Range BrahMos missiles
- 16–32 Vertical Launch Surface-to-Air Missiles (reported configuration)
- AK-630 Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS)
- Advanced anti-missile defence capability
The BrahMos missile remains India’s premier conventional precision-strike weapon and is already deployed on several frontline naval platforms.
The extended-range version significantly improves the Navy’s ability to engage high-value targets at greater distances.
What are the Features of Advanced Anti-Submarine Warfare
The Indian Ocean is witnessing increasing submarine activity, making anti-submarine warfare (ASW) a top priority.
ASW Systems Expected
- Hull-mounted sonar
- Active towed array sonar
- Triple-tube torpedo launchers
- Capability to operate helicopters such as:
- ALH Dhruv
- Sea King helicopters
These systems will help detect, track and engage hostile submarines more effectively.
Modern Radar and Electronic Warfare Suite
The NGCs are expected to carry a sophisticated sensor package.
Key Systems
- ELM-2248 MF-STAR AESA Radar
- Advanced electronic warfare systems
- Integrated combat management systems
- Modern targeting and fire-control systems
These technologies will improve situational awareness and allow the ships to detect and engage multiple threats simultaneously.
What It Means for GRSE
For Kolkata-based GRSE, the project could become one of the largest contracts in its history.
GRSE’s Current Position
- Delivered 118 warships and patrol vessels to Indian maritime forces
- Currently building around 40 platforms
- Emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) for five NGCs
- Already involved in multiple Navy and Coast Guard programmes
A successful contract award would strengthen GRSE’s order book and reinforce its position among India’s leading defence shipbuilders.
