New Delhi: The Project-18 warship program is emerging as one of India’s most ambitious naval modernization projects. With an estimated cost of around ₹80,000 crore, the Indian Navy’s next-generation destroyer program aims to achieve near-100% indigenisation, showcasing India’s growing capability in designing and building advanced warships.

The project aligns with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and is expected to significantly strengthen India’s maritime power in the Indo-Pacific region.

Updates of Project-18 Warship Program

India’s Project-18 destroyer program has reportedly undergone a major revision, with the estimated cost now reaching approximately ₹80,000 crore.

The revised plan is currently linked to the construction of six advanced destroyers, each expected to displace around 10,000 tonnes. This marks a change from earlier reports that suggested a larger fleet with lower levels of indigenous content.

Project-18 Warship Program: Focus on Near-100% Indigenous Content

One of the most significant features of Project-18 is its goal of achieving near-total indigenisation. The program aims to maximize the use of Indian-designed systems, sensors, weapons, electronics and critical components. This reflects India’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on foreign defence suppliers and strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Mazagon Dock to Build the Warships

The destroyers are expected to be built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), India’s leading naval shipbuilding company. MDL has already successfully delivered advanced warships such as the Kolkata-class (Project-15A) destroyers and continues work on the Visakhapatnam-class (Project-15B) destroyers.

The experience gained from these programs is expected to support the successful execution of Project-18.

Project-18 Warship Program: Advanced Capabilities Expected

Project-18 destroyers are expected to be among the most advanced warships ever built in India. The ships are likely to feature:

  • Advanced air defence systems.
  • Long-range strike weapons.
  • Integrated electronic warfare systems.
  • Modern command and control networks.
  • Enhanced surveillance and sensor technologies.

These capabilities will allow the vessels to perform multiple combat roles in complex maritime environments.

Stronger Presence in the Indo-Pacific

The large size and extended operational range of the destroyers will enable the Indian Navy to conduct missions across vast maritime regions. This will support India’s strategic interests in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and the wider Indo-Pacific.

The ships are expected to play a key role in maintaining maritime security and safeguarding critical sea lanes.

Boost for India’s Defence Industry

The Project-18 program is expected to create significant opportunities for Indian defence manufacturers, technology developers and suppliers.

A high level of indigenous participation could strengthen India’s naval industrial ecosystem and support long-term defence self-reliance.

The project also demonstrates India’s growing ability to design and produce sophisticated military platforms within the country.

Why Project-18 Matters

Project-18 is more than just a warship acquisition program.

It represents India’s effort to build a modern, technologically advanced and self-reliant navy capable of meeting future security challenges.

If the near-100% indigenisation target is achieved, the project could become a landmark achievement for India’s defence manufacturing sector.
