New Delhi: The RCWS-Sharur remote-controlled weapon station marks a major step in India’s efforts to strengthen indigenous naval defence technology. Developed by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), the advanced system is designed to improve the Indian Navy’s combat capabilities through remote operation, precision targeting and multi-role firepower. The new platform supports India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative by reducing dependence on imported defence equipment.

India Unveils Indigenous RCWS-Sharur

India has introduced the RCWS-Sharur (Remote-Controlled Weapon Station), an advanced naval weapon system developed by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bengaluru.

The system is designed for installation on Indian Navy warships and allows operators to engage targets remotely while remaining protected inside the ship. The development highlights India’s growing capability in indigenous defence manufacturing.

What Is RCWS-Sharur

RCWS-Sharur is a remotely operated naval weapon station that combines firepower, advanced sensors and precision targeting in a single platform. The system is built to defend naval vessels against multiple threats, including enemy boats, coastal targets and low-flying aerial threats. Its modular design allows different weapons to be fitted based on mission requirements.

What are the Features of RCWS-Sharur

The weapon station comes with several advanced capabilities, including:

  • 12.7 mm heavy machine gun as the primary weapon.
  • Option to replace the machine gun with a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher.
  • Two Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (MPATGM) mounted on both sides.
  • 360-degree rotation for all-round target engagement.
  • Effective firing range of up to 2,000 metres.
  • Remote operation from inside the ship for improved crew safety.

These features make RCWS-Sharur suitable for both offensive and defensive naval missions.

Advanced Targeting and Surveillance System

RCWS-Sharur is equipped with a modern electro-optical suite that includes:

  • Day and night camera.
  • Laser rangefinder.
  • Infrared thermal imaging system.
  • Automatic target tracking.

These systems enable accurate target detection and engagement in daylight, darkness and adverse weather conditions.

Future Upgrades Planned

BEL plans to integrate the Naval Anti-Drone System (NADS) into RCWS-Sharur in future versions. This upgrade will improve the platform’s ability to counter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and other emerging battlefield threats. The enhancement will further strengthen the Indian Navy’s layered defence capability.

RCWS-Sharur Trials Underway for Indian Navy

The RCWS-Sharur system is currently undergoing final trials. After successful testing, it is expected to be deployed on Indian Navy vessels to improve operational readiness and maritime security. The indigenous platform is expected to play an important role in protecting India’s interests across the Indo-Pacific region.

Why RCWS-Sharur Is Important

The new weapon station supports India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India programmes by promoting indigenous defence manufacturing. It also strengthens India’s defence industry and reduces reliance on imported remote weapon systems. As maritime threats continue to evolve, advanced systems like RCWS-Sharur will help improve the Indian Navy’s combat effectiveness and crew safety.
