New Delhi: An CIKVS Patent-5 concept has been introduced by Indian defence innovator C.J. Varghese as a proposed next-generation close-in naval defence system. The concept aims to help warships defeat fast-moving sea-skimming anti-ship missiles during the final moments before impact. It is currently a patented concept, not an officially approved Indian Navy programme.
What is CIKVS Patent-5
CIKVS stands for Close-In Kinetic Vessel Shield. It is designed as a hard-kill defence system that could intercept incoming anti-ship missiles at very close range. According to the concept, the system would provide an additional protective layer for frontline warships. It is intended to improve a ship’s ability to respond quickly against modern missile threats approaching just above sea level.

What is the Importance of CIKVS Patent-5
Modern anti-ship missiles are becoming more difficult to stop. Many fly only a few metres above the sea, reducing radar detection time and giving warships only seconds to react.
To counter these threats, navies use multiple layers of defence, including long-range missiles, electronic warfare systems, decoys and Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS). The CIKVS concept proposes adding another hard-kill interception layer to strengthen this defence network.
How Would the System Work
The concept illustration shows a deck-mounted launcher firing a compact interceptor towards an incoming missile. While detailed technical specifications have not been made public, the proposed system focuses on:
- Rapid interception of sea-skimming missiles.
- Better protection for warships and crew.
- Improved survivability during high-intensity naval battles.
- An additional hard-kill option alongside existing naval defence systems.
Focus on Crew Protection
The proposal also highlights the growing threat of saturation attacks, where several anti-ship missiles or unmanned aerial systems attack simultaneously. A faster and more effective final defence layer could increase the chances of protecting both the vessel and its personnel during such attacks.
Not an Official Indian Navy Programme
It is important to note that CIKVS Patent-5 remains a patented concept developed by C.J. Varghese. There has been no official confirmation from the Indian Navy or the Ministry of Defence regarding its adoption, testing, procurement or development as an operational programme.
