Vishakhapatnam: INS Mahendragiri has officially joined the Indian Navy, marking another major step in India’s defence self-reliance and naval modernisation. The advanced stealth warship was commissioned by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at Visakhapatnam on July 11, 2026. Built with over 75% indigenous content, the frigate strengthens India’s maritime security, boosts the Navy’s combat power, and highlights the success of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The Indian Navy inducted INS Mahendragiri, the sixth Project 17A stealth frigate, into its Eastern Fleet during a commissioning ceremony held at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

Why INS Mahendragiri Is Important
INS Mahendragiri is one of India’s most advanced indigenous warships. The frigate has been designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said INS Mahendragiri represents India’s technological progress and commitment to building a combat-ready Navy.
He said India will continue investing in next-generation defence technologies while also strengthening conventional military capabilities.
The Defence Minister added that the ship will help expand India’s blue-water naval reach and further strengthen India’s presence across the Indian Ocean Region and the Indo-Pacific.

Rajnath Singh said indigenous warship construction strengthens not only India’s defence preparedness but also its industrial ecosystem. He noted that shipbuilding supports sectors such as:

The project has also generated employment and encouraged innovation among Indian industries and MSMEs.
Indian Navy’s Growing Indigenous Fleet
INS Mahendragiri is the sixth Project 17A frigate inducted into the Indian Navy within about 18 months. Earlier ships in the class include:

- INS Dunagiri

Named After the Mahendragiri Mountain Range
The warship is named after the Mahendragiri mountain range in the Eastern Ghats. It carries the motto “Mighty, Majestic, Matchless,” symbolising strength, resilience, and unwavering commitment to protecting India’s maritime interests.
More than 200 Indian industries, including numerous MSMEs, contributed to building the vessel, making it another milestone for India’s indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem.
