India Gets Fresh Su-57E Offer from Russia with Next-Gen R-77M Missile Package

Russia has renewed its Su-57E stealth fighter proposal for India, offering advanced R-77M missiles, local production, and technology transfer as India evaluates options to strengthen its air power against China and Pakistan.

New Delhi: Russia has once again pushed its Su-57E stealth fighter offer to India, aiming to strengthen the Indian Air Force against growing air power challenges from China and Pakistan. The latest proposal reportedly includes the advanced R-77M beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) and local production support under India’s “Make in India” program.

The offer comes at a time when India is facing a shortage of fighter squadrons and is also working on its indigenous AMCA stealth fighter project.

Details of Russia Su-57E R-77M Missile Integration

According to multiple defence reports, Russia’s proposal includes:

  • Direct supply of Su-57E fifth-generation stealth fighter jets
  • Possible local manufacturing in India
  • Technology transfer support
  • Integration with Indian weapons and systems
  • Advanced R-77M air-to-air missile package
  • Fast delivery timeline for immediate squadron support

Reports suggest that India may initially receive around 40 to 60 aircraft if the deal moves forward. Production could later expand through Indian facilities already used for Su-30MKI manufacturing.

Why the Su-57E Matters for India

India currently operates fewer fighter squadrons than the officially required strength. At the same time:

  • China is rapidly expanding its J-20 stealth fighter fleet
  • Pakistan is expected to strengthen its stealth aircraft capabilities in the future
  • India’s indigenous AMCA fighter may take several more years to enter service

Because of this gap, Russia is pitching the Su-57E as an interim fifth-generation solution for the Indian Air Force.

What are the Features of the Sukhoi Su-57E

The Sukhoi Su-57 is Russia’s fifth-generation stealth fighter aircraft designed for:

  • Stealth operations
  • Long-range combat
  • Super maneuverability
  • Internal weapons carriage
  • Advanced radar and sensor fusion
  • Air superiority and strike missions

The aircraft can carry missiles inside internal weapon bays to reduce radar visibility.

R-77M Missile: The Biggest Highlight

One major attraction in Russia’s latest offer is the inclusion of the R-77M air-to-air missile.

Important features of the R-77M:

  • Beyond-visual-range combat capability
  • AESA radar seeker
  • Dual-pulse rocket motor
  • Better maneuverability at long distances
  • Designed for stealth fighters like the Su-57

The missile is specially developed to engage fast-moving targets, including modern fighter aircraft performing high-G maneuvers. Experts believe the dual-pulse motor helps maintain speed in the final stage of attack.

Russia Su-57E R-77M Missile Integration: Local Production Plan Under “Make in India”

Russia has also reportedly offered:

  • Full or partial technology transfer
  • Source code access in some areas
  • Local manufacturing using existing Indian aerospace infrastructure

Russian officials believe India’s experience with Su-30MKI production can help speed up Su-57E assembly lines in the country.

India’s Current Focus

India is simultaneously working on multiple air power programs:

  • Tejas Mk1A
  • Tejas Mk2
  • AMCA stealth fighter
  • Rafale fleet expansion
  • Upgrades for Su-30MKI aircraft

The government has not officially confirmed any Su-57E deal yet. Current discussions are believed to be at the evaluation and technical assessment stage.

Strategic Impact in Asia

If India eventually acquires the Su-57E:

  • It could become India’s first operational stealth fighter
  • India may narrow the stealth fighter gap with China
  • Russia would strengthen its defence partnership with India
  • The regional air power balance in Asia could shift

However, the final decision will likely depend on cost, technology transfer terms, and India’s long-term indigenous fighter strategy.
