New Delhi: The Suryakiran Aerobatic Team of the Indian Air Force performed a special air show during the 75th anniversary celebrations of the historic Somnath Temple on May 11.
The event is part of the grand “Somnath Amrut Mahotsav 2026” celebrations and showcased India’s aviation strength, precision flying skills, and national pride.
Somnath Temple 75th Anniversary: Grand Air Show
According to officials, six Hawk Mk-132 aircraft of the Suryakiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT) performed synchronized aerial formations above the temple complex at around 11 AM in the presence of Narendra Modi.
The air show will combine:

- Close-formation flying
- Nationalistic visual displays
Officials said the performance will symbolize India’s growing defence capabilities and aviation excellence.

The Suryakiran Aerobatic Team is the official aerobatic display squadron of the Indian Air Force. Formed in 1996, the team is known worldwide for its disciplined flying formations and complex aerial stunts.

Officials stated that this will be the first major aerobatic display over the Somnath Temple area. The event is being organized as part of celebrations marking 75 years since the reconstruction and inauguration of the temple after Independence.

- Flower shower by IAF helicopter
- Public gathering and official events
Aircraft to Fly at Speeds Up to 900 Kmph
Officials involved with the event said the aircraft will fly at speeds between 800 and 900 kmph during the demonstration. Pilots will perform extremely close formations, sometimes maintaining only a few meters of distance between aircraft.
The performance will be led by Group Captain Ajay Dasarathi, while the team includes 13 trained pilots.
Focus on Safety and Coordination
The Indian Air Force has reportedly made detailed safety arrangements for the event. Ground coordination teams and bird hazard control units will remain active during the show to ensure smooth flying operations.
Squadron Leader Aman Goyal will assist in monitoring wind conditions, aircraft separation, and operational safety from the ground.
