New Delhi: In a landmark step towards strengthening women’s safety and creating a more gender-sensitive law enforcement system, Delhi has inaugurated its first fully women-run police station in the Sabzi Mandi area of North Delhi. The pioneering facility is staffed entirely by women police personnel, from the Station House Officer (SHO) and investigating officers to constables and support staff.
The police station was inaugurated by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu in the presence of senior Delhi Police officials, including Police Commissioner Satish Golcha. The initiative is being viewed as a major milestone in the evolution of policing in the national capital, with authorities hoping it will encourage more women to report crimes without fear, hesitation or social stigma.
First-of-Its-Kind Police Station in Delhi
What distinguishes the new police station from conventional police establishments is its exclusively female workforce. Every position within the station has been assigned to women officers, creating an environment specifically designed to make women complainants feel more comfortable and supported.
Officials said the initiative is intended to ensure that women facing abuse, harassment, violence or other forms of crime can access police services in a more empathetic and victim-friendly atmosphere.
The station has been established within the Sabzi Mandi police station complex and will function as a dedicated centre for addressing crimes against women and related social issues.
Focus on Crimes Against Women
The newly established police station will primarily deal with serious offences affecting women, including:
- Domestic violence
- Sexual harassment
- Stalking
- Dowry-related abuse
- Assault cases
- Cyber harassment
- Gender-based violence
Specially trained women police personnel have been deployed to investigate complaints and provide timely support to victims. Authorities believe that the presence of women officers throughout the entire investigation and grievance redressal process will significantly improve victim confidence and cooperation.
Creating a Safe and Comfortable Reporting Environment
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu said the station would provide women with a safe platform to report crimes without fear or hesitation.
He expressed confidence that women victims would be more willing to come forward and seek justice when interacting with female officers at every stage of the policing process.
The Lieutenant Governor noted that the station would serve as a direct mechanism for addressing the concerns and challenges faced by women in the capital city.
More Women-Only Police Stations Planned
Sandhu indicated that similar facilities may soon be established in other districts of Delhi as part of broader efforts to improve women’s safety and accessibility to law enforcement services.
Officials believe that expanding the model could help strengthen public trust in policing while ensuring faster and more effective handling of crimes against women.
The move aligns with ongoing efforts by Delhi Police to modernise policing practices and make them more inclusive, accessible and citizen-centric.
Awareness, Counselling and Community Outreach
Apart from law enforcement duties, the police station will also undertake several community-focused initiatives.
According to officials, the station will organise:
- Awareness campaigns on women’s rights
- Legal literacy programmes
- Community outreach activities
- Counselling and victim support services
- Public engagement initiatives
These programmes aim to educate women about available legal remedies, encourage reporting of offences and strengthen collaboration between police and local communities.
Jan Sunwai Programme to Begin Across Delhi
During the inauguration, the Lieutenant Governor also announced that all senior police officers across Delhi would begin hearing public grievances under the ‘Jan Sunwai’ programme starting Saturday.
The initiative is intended to improve accountability, responsiveness and public engagement within the policing system by allowing citizens direct access to senior police officials.
Significant Step Towards Gender-Sensitive Policing
Police officials described the establishment of Delhi’s first all-women police station as a significant advancement in creating a gender-sensitive policing framework.
The station is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing women’s safety, improving the quality of investigations into gender-based crimes and building greater confidence among women seeking police assistance.
As Delhi continues to witness growing concerns regarding women’s safety and cyber-enabled crimes, the launch of a dedicated women-run police station marks an important institutional step towards ensuring safer public spaces and more accessible justice mechanisms for women across the capital.
