New Delhi: With India preparing to host the BRICS Leaders’ Summit 2026 in New Delhi, the Central Government is learnt to be considering a service extension for Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri beyond his current tenure ending on July 14, 2026. According to highly placed sources, the move is aimed at ensuring continuity in India’s diplomatic leadership during one of the country’s most significant international engagements this year. The government is understood to be prioritising institutional stability as India leads the BRICS grouping amid an increasingly complex geopolitical environment.
Centre Mulls Extension for Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri
Sources in the national security and foreign policy establishment said the New Delhi establishment is actively considering extending the tenure of Vikram Misri (IFS:1989), who currently serves as India’s 35th Foreign Secretary.
Misri assumed office on July 15, 2024, succeeding Vinay Mohan Kwatra.
Soon after taking charge, the government had approved a 20-month post-superannuation extension in November 2024, allowing him to complete the standard two-year tenure as Foreign Secretary despite attaining the age of superannuation.
His present tenure is scheduled to conclude on July 14, 2026.
According to sources, the government is now examining the possibility of granting him a further extension.
BRICS Summit Driving Continuity in Diplomatic Leadership
Officials familiar with the matter said India’s upcoming role as host of the BRICS Leaders’ Summit 2026 is one of the principal reasons behind the proposed extension.
India officially assumed the BRICS Chairmanship for 2026, with New Delhi set to host the summit during September 12–13, 2026.
The summit is expected to witness the participation of several Heads of State and Government and involve extensive negotiations on global political, economic and strategic issues.
Given the magnitude of the event, the government is understood to be keen on avoiding any leadership transition within the Ministry of External Affairs during the crucial preparatory and execution phases.
Institutional Stability a Key Consideration
Sources indicated that the Modi 3.0 government views diplomatic continuity as critical while India leads one of the world’s most influential multilateral forums.
Officials believe a mid-course change in the country’s top diplomatic leadership could affect ongoing negotiations and coordination involving partner nations.
Mr Misri has been directly overseeing several diplomatic engagements connected with India’s BRICS presidency and is closely involved in preparations for the summit.
According to bureaucratic sources, continuity at the top is expected to ensure seamless execution of India’s diplomatic strategy over the coming months.
India’s BRICS Presidency Comes at a Critical Global Moment
India’s BRICS Chairmanship coincides with a period of significant geopolitical uncertainty.
The summit will be organised under the theme: “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
The agenda is expected to cover:
- Global economic cooperation
- Trade and investment
- Climate action
- Technology and innovation
- Reform of global governance institutions
- Security and geopolitical developments
- South-South cooperation
The summit is likely to involve intensive diplomatic consultations among member countries and invited partner nations.
Leadership Transition During Summit Preparations Considered Unlikely
According to officials familiar with the matter, there is little appetite within the government for a leadership change at the Ministry of External Affairs while preparations for the summit are entering their final phase.
Mr Misri’s deep understanding of regional and global strategic issues, coupled with his involvement in ongoing diplomatic negotiations, is seen as an important factor supporting continuity.
Sources said that while no formal decision has yet been announced, the possibility of an extension remains under active consideration.
