Raipur: The Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Vishnu Deo Sai, has expressed satisfaction over the approval granted by Indian Railways for the ₹755 crore Champa–Korba third railway line project under the South East Central Railway zone. He extended gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for sanctioning the key infrastructure project.

The Chief Minister said that this development marks a significant milestone for Chhattisgarh’s industrial growth, transport infrastructure, and contribution to India’s energy security.

Major Boost to Rail Infrastructure in Chhattisgarh

The Champa–Korba third rail line will be developed at a cost of ₹755 crore under the South East Central Railway (South East Central Railway). The project aims to strengthen rail capacity on one of the most important freight corridors in the region.

According to the Chief Minister, the project reflects the continuous expansion of rail infrastructure in the state under coordinated efforts of the “double-engine government,” which is accelerating development across sectors.

Improved Passenger and Freight Connectivity

Once completed, the new third line is expected to significantly improve both passenger and freight movement between Champa and Korba.

Key benefits include:

  • Smoother train operations with reduced congestion
  • Fewer operational delays on the existing route
  • Capacity for additional passenger train services in the future
  • Improved safety and reliability of rail services

The Chief Minister emphasized that these upgrades will directly benefit daily commuters and long-distance travelers in the region.

Strengthening Coal Transportation and Energy Supply

Korba, often referred to as the “energy capital” of India, plays a crucial role in coal supply for power generation across the country. The Champa–Korba rail section is a vital link connecting coal mines of the South Eastern Coalfields Limited (South Eastern Coalfields Limited) and Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (Mahanadi Coalfields Limited) to the national rail network.

The third line will:

  • Increase coal transportation capacity
  • Strengthen logistics for power plants across India
  • Support rising national energy demand
  • Improve efficiency of freight movement

Strategic Investment for Industrial Growth

The Chief Minister described the project as a forward-looking initiative designed to meet future transport and industrial needs. It is expected to:

  • Ease heavy freight traffic
  • Enhance railway operational efficiency
  • Boost regional industrial development
  • Encourage new investment opportunities
  • Generate employment in surrounding areas

Regions such as Korba and Janjgir–Champa are expected to benefit significantly from improved connectivity and economic activity.

Contribution to Regional Development and Employment

Beyond freight movement, the project is also expected to strengthen the socio-economic landscape of the region. Better rail connectivity will support:

  • Expansion of trade and commerce
  • Growth in tourism and services
  • Improved access to education and healthcare
  • Increased employment opportunities

The Chief Minister noted that the development will accelerate growth in surrounding areas and integrate them further into the state’s economic mainstream.

Part of a Larger Rail Expansion Vision for Chhattisgarh

The state government highlighted that Chhattisgarh has received increased priority in railway infrastructure development in recent years. Expansion includes:

  • New railway lines
  • Doubling and third/fourth line projects
  • Modernization of railway stations
  • Significant increase in railway budget allocation

Recently, the Dharamjaigarh–Pathalgaon–Lohardaga rail project was also notified as a special railway project, which the government sees as a major step toward improving connectivity in northern Chhattisgarh.

The Chief Minister also highlighted that the approval of the Dharamjaigarh–Pathalgaon–Lohardaga Railway Project as a special railway project is a major achievement for tribal and forest regions such as Jashpur.

This project is expected to:

  • Connect Jashpur region to the national rail network for the first time
  • Boost tourism, trade, and education
  • Improve healthcare access
  • Create new employment opportunities
  • Support holistic development of tribal areas

Vision for a Developed Chhattisgarh and Developed India

CM Vishnu Deo Sai expressed confidence that the Champa–Korba third rail line will play a key role in strengthening Chhattisgarh’s industrial and economic growth. He said the state is steadily advancing toward contributing more significantly to India’s development through strong rail infrastructure and improved logistics systems.

He added that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chhattisgarh has received unprecedented support in rail infrastructure, enabling long-term growth and connectivity improvements across the state.
