Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh government led by Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav is set to complete three years in office next month, with its focus spanning agriculture, industrial investment, women’s welfare, youth employment, education and infrastructure development.
Since taking charge in December 2023, the government has pursued different priorities across these sectors. According to the performance assessment, the first year placed emphasis on women’s welfare, the second on industrial development and investment, while the third year has been focused on farmers’ welfare. The government has also identified youth-related initiatives as a priority for the coming year.
Investment Proposals Exceed ₹32 Lakh Crore
Industrial investment has been a major focus of the state government. Madhya Pradesh has received investment proposals worth more than ₹32 lakh crore over the past three years. Of this, proposals worth around ₹12 lakh crore are stated to have moved to the implementation stage.
The government has also claimed that these investments have generated employment for lakhs of young people. In addition, it is preparing to undertake recruitment for more than two lakh government posts. The state has also taken steps to address long-pending promotions in government services.
Focus on Farmers and Rural Economy
Agriculture and farmers’ welfare remain among the key priorities of the government. Alongside minimum support price (MSP), the state is focusing on the availability of fertilisers and electricity at affordable rates, solar pumps, compensation for crop losses and financial assistance through income-support schemes.
The government is also promoting allied activities such as dairy farming, fisheries and food processing to diversify rural livelihoods and strengthen the agricultural economy.
Budget and Irrigation Expansion
The state’s annual budget has increased during the government’s tenure and currently stands at approximately ₹4.23 lakh crore. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has expressed the ambition of taking it to nearly ₹7 lakh crore during his tenure.
Irrigation expansion is another major area of focus. The state is working towards increasing its irrigation coverage from around 65 lakh hectares to one crore hectares.
For this purpose, the government has initiated work on river-linking projects in coordination with Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. These projects are expected to improve water availability for irrigation, drinking water supply and power generation, including in the Bundelkhand region.
Education, Healthcare and Urban Infrastructure
In education, the government has developed the Sandipani Schools model, which it aims to expand. However, the source assessment notes that the model’s long-term outcomes will take time to establish.
The state is also prioritising skill development and higher education. In healthcare, it is pursuing a plan to increase the number of government and private medical colleges to 55, matching the number of districts in Madhya Pradesh.
Urban development plans include the creation of metropolitan regions by integrating major cities with surrounding urban areas. The state has also set a target of constructing one lakh kilometres of roads.
Alongside metro rail services, the government is implementing the Chief Minister Sugam Transport Scheme to improve connectivity between villages and other parts of the state.
Challenges Ahead
The coming years are expected to bring several administrative and political challenges for the government. The state’s electoral calendar includes local body, Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, while Ujjain is also preparing to host the Simhastha religious gathering.
The government’s performance in the remaining tenure will be assessed against its stated targets in investment, employment, agriculture, irrigation, education and infrastructure.
As it approaches the completion of three years in office, the Mohan Yadav government faces the task of translating its announced projects and policy priorities into measurable outcomes.
