New Delhi: India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement is once again in the spotlight after New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said that 57% of New Zealand’s exports to India will become tariff-free from day one under the proposed trade pact. His remarks came just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to New Zealand, where trade and economic cooperation are expected to be key discussion points. The statement reflects both countries’ commitment to strengthening bilateral trade and investment ties.
Details of India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon shared his views in a post on X (formerly Twitter), calling the India-New Zealand trade agreement a major opportunity for Kiwi businesses.
He said the agreement would help New Zealand exporters by reducing tariffs on products sold in India. According to Luxon, 57% of New Zealand’s exports to India will enjoy zero tariffs from the very first day the agreement comes into force.
What Does the Free Trade Agreement Mean?
The proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) aims to increase trade between India and New Zealand by lowering import duties and improving market access.
According to New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the agreement will eventually provide preferential access for 95% of New Zealand’s current exports to India, with tariff benefits increasing over time. Initially, 57% of exports will become duty-free immediately, while additional products will receive tariff reductions in later stages.
