New Delhi: The NHAI FASTag verification drive has been launched to improve the accuracy of toll collection across India’s highways. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has directed all FASTag issuing banks to immediately verify Vehicle Registration Numbers (VRNs) linked with FASTags. This step aims to remove mismatches, prevent revenue loss, and strengthen the digital toll system. The move is especially important as India prepares for advanced tolling systems like barrier-free toll collection.

NHAI FASTag Verification Drive: Why NHAI Has Taken This Step

NHAI received multiple complaints where the vehicle number captured by FASTag scanners did not match the actual number plate.

This mismatch can:

  • Affect enforcement systems

  • Lead to toll evasion

  • Cause incorrect penalties

To fix this issue, banks have been asked to verify and correct all VRN data linked with FASTags.

NHAI FASTag Verification Drive: What Banks Have Been Asked To Do

NHAI has issued clear instructions to FASTag issuer banks:

  • Verify all vehicle registration numbers linked with FASTags

  • Identify incorrect or invalid entries

  • Blacklist FASTags with wrong or fake VRNs

This verification must be done urgently as per government guidelines.

Main Reason: Data Accuracy in Toll Collection

The Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system depends heavily on correct data.If the data is wrong:

  • Toll collection becomes unreliable

  • Vehicles may avoid paying tolls

  • Government revenue may be affected

NHAI said improving data accuracy will strengthen transparency and system efficiency.

Old FASTags Are the Main Problem

Many mismatches are linked to older FASTags issued before integration with the VAHAN database. At that time:

  • Verification systems were weak

  • More manual processes were used

  • Errors in vehicle data were common

Now, the system is more digital and requires accurate records.

Important for Future: MLFF Toll System

This step is also important for upcoming Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling. In MLFF:

  • Vehicles will not stop at toll plazas

  • Toll will be collected automatically

  • Enforcement will depend on digital records

If VRN data is wrong, the system may fail to detect violations correctly. Accurate FASTag-VRN mapping is therefore critical for this technology.

What Happens If Your FASTag Has Wrong Details

If your FASTag is linked to incorrect vehicle details:

  • It may get blacklisted

  • You may face issues at toll plazas

  • You could receive penalties or notices

Users are advised to ensure their FASTag details are correct.

NHAI’s Long-Term Goal

NHAI aims to:

  • Improve transparencyPrevent misuse of FASTag

  • Enhance user experience

  • Make toll collection faster and more efficient

This step is part of a larger effort to modernize India’s highway system.
