GRSE to Boost Shipbuilding Capacity to 28 Vessels by 2025, Eyes Greenfield Facility for Commercial Expansion

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), one of India’s leading defence shipyards, has unveiled an ambitious plan to scale up its shipbuilding capacity from 24 to 28 vessels by the end of 2025. This strategic move comes in response to a robust order book and rising demand for both naval and commercial ships, reinforcing GRSE’s crucial role in strengthening India’s maritime capabilities and advancing the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Headquartered in Kolkata, GRSE currently operates with a capacity to build 24 ships, backed by state-of-the-art facilities including a dry dock, building berths, slipways, and a non-tidal wet basin designed for outfitting medium and small vessels. The shipyard, a cornerstone of India’s defence sector, has delivered over 100 warships to date—including frigates, corvettes, and patrol vessels—with over 90% indigenous content.

In a strategic push to accommodate a growing order pipeline and tap into new opportunities, GRSE plans to increase its production capacity to 28 ships annually by 2025. The company is simultaneously exploring the possibility of setting up a greenfield shipyard, specifically tailored for commercial shipbuilding, which will further boost its output in the long term.

GRSE’s current projects include three P17A Advanced Frigates, eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts, four Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels, and several survey ships for the Indian Navy. The company is also executing export orders for clients in Bangladesh and Germany. Notably, GRSE recently delivered the INS Sandhayak—the largest survey vessel ever constructed in India—demonstrating its advanced technical capabilities.

To meet its enhanced production targets, GRSE has adopted several strategic initiatives. One major development is the acquisition of four dry docks from Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK). These docks, capable of accommodating vessels up to 160 meters in length, will significantly enhance GRSE’s ship repair and construction operations and provide greater operational flexibility for managing multiple projects concurrently.

In addition, GRSE has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with other shipyards, including Swan Energy, to foster collaboration in commercial shipbuilding, thereby further expanding its capabilities in the non-defence segment.

Looking forward, GRSE is evaluating several locations across different states for establishing a greenfield shipyard dedicated to building commercial ships of up to 300 meters in length. The proposed facility is expected to become operational within the next five years and will play a key role in fulfilling GRSE’s vision under the “Make in India, Make for the World” initiative, aimed at expanding exports in both naval and commercial markets.

GRSE’s current order book is valued at approximately Rs. 72,200 crore and includes prestigious defence projects like the P17A stealth frigates. On the commercial front, the shipyard is building four Multi-Purpose Vessels (MPVs) for German firm Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler and Reederei GmbH & Co. KG, with an option for four additional vessels valued at $108 million. Other international orders include an advanced ocean-going tug and a dredger for Bangladesh, highlighting the company’s expanding global footprint.

Financially, GRSE reported an all-time high revenue of Rs. 25,075 crore for FY25, along with a record profit after tax of Rs. 7,527 crore, signaling strong operational performance and investor confidence. Analysts forecast that GRSE’s revenue could climb to Rs. 71,000 crore by FY28, driven by consistent execution and a robust order inflow.

The company is also focusing on innovation, forming partnerships for AI and robotics-based technologies. It has diversified into areas such as portable steel bridges and 30mm Naval Surface Guns, positioning itself for sustained growth across both defence and commercial sectors.
