Gandhinagar: Gujarat is moving towards sustainable infrastructure development with a major focus on eco-friendly road construction. The state government has approved a large-scale initiative worth ₹1,147 crore to develop climate-resilient and green technology-based roads across multiple districts.
The project aims to modernize road infrastructure while reducing environmental impact and improving long-term durability.
20 Roads Across Gujarat to Be Developed Using Green Technology
Under this initiative, construction and redevelopment work will be carried out on 20 roads across various districts of Gujarat. The projects will include:
- Road widening and resurfacing
- Four-laning and strengthening works
- RCC gutter lines and side shoulders
- Earthwork and protective structures
- Installation of road furniture and rumble strips
- Use of advanced methods like white topping and glass grid technology
These upgrades are designed to enhance safety, durability, and traffic efficiency across key routes.
Eco-Friendly Construction Process and Material Reuse
A key highlight of the project is the use of green construction technology, which focuses on reusing old road materials and reducing waste.
The process involves:
- Excavation and treatment of old road surfaces with lime
- Pulverising and stabilising existing materials
- Spreading and dry rolling of reused road layers
- Cement application and chemical stabilisation
- Compacting with modern machinery for strength and stability
After seven days of preparation, a Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer (SAMI) is laid before asphalt work begins. This advanced fibre layer helps reduce cracking, absorb traffic stress, and extend road lifespan.
Benefits: Lower Costs, Longer Life and Reduced Carbon Emissions
Experts say the green road technology offers multiple long-term benefits, including:
- Reduced construction and maintenance costs
- Increased road durability and lifespan
- Lower carbon emissions during construction
- Conservation of natural resources like soil and aggregates
- Reduced need for frequent repairs
This approach supports Gujarat’s broader goal of environmentally responsible infrastructure development.

Gujarat’s Focus on Sustainable Infrastructure Growth
The initiative reflects Gujarat’s push toward climate-resilient infrastructure and sustainable development. By integrating modern engineering techniques with environmental conservation practices, the state aims to build stronger, longer-lasting roads while minimizing ecological impact.
This project is expected to significantly improve connectivity and boost regional development across multiple districts.
