Delhi: New Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has approved major infrastructure projects worth over ₹1,000 crore under the “Mission Yamuna” initiative, aimed at improving water management, sewage treatment, and river rejuvenation in the national capital. The decision is part of a broader strategy to make Delhi cleaner, greener, and water-secure.
12 New Sewage Treatment Plants Planned in Najafgarh Region
A key highlight of the project is the construction of 12 Decentralized Sewage Treatment Plants (DSTPs) in the Najafgarh region at a cost of around ₹860 crore under the AMRUT Mission.
These plants will collectively have a capacity of 46.5 million gallons per day (MGD) and will be located across multiple areas, including:
- Mitraon (17 MGD plant)
- Kair, Kanganheri, Kakrola, Dichau Kalan
- Galibpur, Sarangpur, Shikarpur
- Hasanpur, Jafarpur, Kazipur, Khera Dabar
The initiative is expected to benefit more than 121 unauthorized colonies, 35 villages, and around 7 lakh residents, while also preventing untreated sewage from entering the Najafgarh Drain, a key tributary connected to the Yamuna river system.
Major Upgrades in Sewer and Water Infrastructure Across Delhi
The government has also cleared several additional infrastructure projects:
- ₹57 crore for rehabilitation of a 40-year-old sewer line in Trilokpuri
- New underground reservoir and booster pumping station in Rohtas Nagar at a cost of ₹27 crore, with 0.72 MGD capacity
- Strengthening of local water supply systems in Shahdara region
These projects aim to modernize aging infrastructure and improve water distribution efficiency in densely populated areas.
Keshavpur STP to Be Upgraded at ₹122 Crore
Another major approval includes the upgradation of the Keshavpur Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at an estimated cost of ₹122 crore.
Key improvements include:
- Increase in capacity from 12 MGD to 18 MGD
- Upgraded water treatment to meet modern environmental standards
- Operation and maintenance support for 11 years
- Enhanced recycled water usage and conservation systems
This upgrade is expected to significantly improve wastewater treatment efficiency in the region.
Mission Yamuna: Focus on River Cleaning and Sustainable Water Use
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that the government’s priority is to utilize all available resources to improve public welfare and environmental conditions in Delhi.
She stated that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Delhi aims to set a national benchmark in:
- Yamuna river rejuvenation
- Sewage treatment expansion
- Rainwater harvesting systems
- Sustainable water management
Officials noted that the project will play a major role in reducing pollution and improving the ecological health of the Yamuna River.
Anti-Pollution Drive: Advanced Air Purification Technologies Reviewed
Alongside water infrastructure reforms, the Delhi government also reviewed anti-pollution technologies as part of its clean-air initiative.
Key systems inspected include:
- STR 101 Filterless Air Purifier, already installed along Sat Guru Ram Singh Marg, capable of treating large volumes of polluted air
- EV-mounted Anti-Smog Gun, India’s first zero-emission mobile smog control system, deployed in Kirti Nagar and Mayapuri
- PAWAN III Pollution Control Device, installed near Kirti Nagar Fire Station to reduce vehicular emissions at the source
These technologies aim to create cleaner air corridors in high-traffic and industrial zones.
Government Push for Clean, Green, and Water-Secure Delhi
The Delhi government said these initiatives under Mission Yamuna will directly benefit millions of residents by improving sanitation, water availability, and environmental quality.
Officials and engineers from the Delhi Jal Board have been congratulated for executing the large-scale projects, which are expected to significantly strengthen Delhi’s long-term urban infrastructure and public health systems.
