Delhi: Uber has officially launched its shared ride service, Uber Share, from Terminal 3 (T3) of Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. The initiative was flagged off by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, marking a major step toward promoting shared mobility and reducing traffic congestion in the capital.
The launch event also saw the presence of Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who highlighted the importance of sustainable transport solutions in improving urban mobility and air quality.
Uber Share Service Begins Operations at IGI Airport T3
The newly introduced Uber Share service allows passengers travelling in the same direction to share a single ride from Delhi Airport’s T3 terminal. This means travellers heading toward similar destinations can now split their cab ride, making travel more cost-effective and efficient.
Uber officially rolled out the service from the airport’s arrival zone, offering a structured pick-up system near the multi-level car parking area.

Government Push for Shared and Sustainable Mobility
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off the service, emphasizing the need to reduce single-occupancy vehicles, especially at high-traffic hubs like airports.
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa stated that the initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for citizens to adopt public transport and shared mobility solutions. According to him, such measures can help reduce congestion, improve air quality, and support the development of more sustainable cities.
Designed to Reduce Traffic and Improve Air Quality
Officials highlighted that the Uber Share initiative aims to reduce the number of vehicles operating at busy transit points such as airports. By increasing occupancy per vehicle, the service is expected to:
- Reduce road congestion around IGI Airport
- Lower emissions from individual rides
- Improve traffic flow in high-density zones
- Promote efficient use of urban transport infrastructure
The initiative is seen as part of a broader effort to encourage environmentally friendly commuting habits in Delhi.
Uber India on the Benefits of Shared Rides
Gaurav Shardal, Head of City Operations at Uber India, said that airport routes are among the busiest travel corridors in any city. He added that Uber Share is designed to provide passengers with a smoother and more efficient travel option while reducing the number of vehicles on the road.
The company believes the service will significantly enhance travel convenience for passengers arriving at or departing from the airport.
How to Book Uber Share at Delhi Airport T3
Passengers arriving at IGI Airport Terminal 3 can book an Uber Share ride by following a few simple steps:
- Exit the T3 arrivals terminal and head toward the multi-level car parking area
- Open the Uber app
- Enter your destination within Delhi
- Scroll and select the “Share” option
Each passenger is allowed one seat, one standard-sized large bag, and one carry-on bag. Uber then matches riders travelling in the same direction and confirms the shared trip.
Expected to Benefit Over 700,000 Monthly Travelers
According to estimates, the Uber Share service could benefit nearly 700,000 passengers per month who travel through Terminal 3. On average, around 100,000 app-based cabs operate at T3 each month, many of which are eligible for participation in the shared ride system.
Officials expect the service to significantly improve mobility efficiency at one of India’s busiest airport terminals.
A Step Toward Smarter Urban Transport in Delhi
The introduction of Uber Share at Delhi Airport reflects a growing shift toward shared and sustainable transport systems in major cities. With rising traffic congestion and environmental concerns, the initiative is expected to play a key role in reshaping urban commuting patterns and improving the overall travel experience for passengers.
