Gandhinagar: In a significant development amid the ongoing election atmosphere, the Gujarat chapter of the Indian Police Service (IPS) Association has formally approached the State Election Commission, seeking action against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Gopal Italia over remarks made in a recent social media broadcast.
The Association has termed the comments as “abusive, derogatory and defamatory,” raising concerns over their potential impact on public trust in key democratic institutions.
Trigger: Viral Facebook Live Broadcast
The controversy stems from a Facebook Live video streamed by Italia on April 26, which quickly gained traction and circulated widely across various social media platforms.
According to accounts cited in the memorandum, the MLA allegedly used “highly inflammatory language” while referring to senior police officers and personnel. He also reportedly questioned the functioning and neutrality of sections of the police force as well as election authorities, alleging bias in the handling of political activities and enforcement measures.

IPS Association Calls Remarks ‘Affront’ to Force
In its submission, the IPS Association described the remarks as a “personal affront” to members of the police force and a “calculated attempt to incite public distrust” in both the police machinery and the electoral system.
The memorandum was signed by Association President Gyanender Singh Malik, who also serves as the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner, and Secretary Nipuna M Torawane.
The Association emphasized that while criticism of public institutions is a legitimate part of democratic discourse, it must not cross into character assassination.
Concerns Over Electoral Integrity
The IPS body underscored the sensitive timing of the remarks, noting that such statements during an active election period could undermine public confidence in institutions responsible for ensuring free and fair elections.
Police personnel, the memorandum highlighted, operate under challenging conditions and play a crucial role in maintaining law and order, particularly during elections when neutrality and efficiency are paramount.
The Association warned that statements questioning institutional integrity without evidence risk eroding trust among citizens and could negatively impact the morale of officials engaged in election duties.
Alleged Violation of Model Code of Conduct
The IPS Association has also flagged the remarks as a potential violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which governs the behavior of political actors during elections.
Calling for strict action, the memorandum urged the Election Commission to intervene, stating that such measures are essential to:
- Uphold the integrity of the electoral process
- Maintain public trust in governance institutions
- Safeguard the morale of police and administrative officials
Memorandum Sent to Key Authorities
In addition to the Election Commission, copies of the memorandum have also been forwarded to the Principal Secretary of the Home Department and the Director General and Inspector General of Police, Gujarat, signaling the seriousness with which the matter is being pursued.
Broader Implications
The episode highlights the growing intersection of political discourse and social media, where statements can rapidly gain traction and influence public perception. It also raises important questions about the limits of political criticism, especially when it concerns institutions tasked with safeguarding democratic processes.
As the election process continues, the response of the Election Commission will be closely watched, both for its immediate implications and its broader message on accountability during elections.
