Gandhinagar, Gujarat: A high-level meeting between Russian and Gujarat leadership has paved the way for stronger cooperation in maritime development, shipbuilding, and education sectors.
The Consul General of Russia in Mumbai, Ivan Fetisov, met Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in Gandhinagar to explore new opportunities for bilateral collaboration.
Focus on Maritime Development and Industrial Growth
During the discussions, both sides emphasized strengthening economic and institutional ties, particularly in strategic sectors such as:
- Maritime infrastructure development
- Shipbuilding and ship recycling
- Port-led industrial growth
- Education and skill development
The meeting highlighted Gujarat’s position as a major maritime hub in India.
Russia Highlights Participation in Vibrant Gujarat Platform
Ivan Fetisov noted that Russia had participated as a partner country in the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024 and also in the recent Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference.
He extended an invitation to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to attend an upcoming business summit in St. Petersburg, signaling deeper engagement between the two sides.
Gujarat Showcases Port-Led Development Model
In response, the Chief Minister highlighted Gujarat’s globally recognised port-led development model and strong maritime ecosystem.
Key points included:
- Gujarat has the longest coastline in India
- Nearly 40% of India’s cargo handling passes through Gujarat ports
- Strong leadership in ship recycling and shipbuilding sectors
- Growing education infrastructure including institutions like Gujarat Maritime University
These strengths position Gujarat as an emerging global hub for logistics and maritime industries.
Push for Education and Investment Collaboration
The meeting also focused on expanding cooperation in education and research, along with facilitating future investment delegations between Gujarat and Russia.
Senior officials from the state industries and infrastructure departments were also present, reflecting Gujarat’s coordinated approach to international partnerships.
The discussions are expected to further strengthen Gujarat’s global engagement strategy, particularly in maritime trade, industrial development, and academic collaboration with international partners.
