New Delhi: The HAL Tejas Mk2, has reached another major milestone. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has confirmed that structural assembly work for the aircraft is currently underway, while the official rollout target has now been set for March 2027.

The Tejas Mk2 programme is considered one of India’s most important defence aviation projects aimed at strengthening the Indian Air Force with an advanced homegrown fighter platform.

Details of HAL Tejas Mk2 Timeline

According to recent updates, HAL stated that:

  • Structural integration activities are progressing steadily.
  • Key fuselage sections and airframe modules are under assembly.
  • The first prototype rollout is officially targeted for March 2027.
  • Multiple subsystems are already in manufacturing and integration stages.

The company also indicated that the programme remains aligned with its present development roadmap despite earlier schedule adjustments.

What is the Tejas Mk2?

The HAL Tejas Mk2, also called the Medium Weight Fighter (MWF), is a more powerful and larger version of the existing HAL Tejas.

Key planned features include:

  • More powerful GE F414 engine
  • Increased payload capacity
  • 11 weapon stations
  • Advanced AESA radar
  • Modern electronic warfare suite
  • Improved range and endurance
  • Better survivability and combat capability

The aircraft is expected to replace ageing fighter fleets such as:

  • Jaguar
  • Mirage 2000
  • MiG-29 aircraft in future phases.

HAL Tejas Mk2 Timeline: Current Development Status

Reports suggest that major aircraft sections are already being manufactured and assembled. HAL and the Aeronautical Development Agency are jointly managing the prototype development process.

Important development stages completed or ongoing include:

  • Wing manufacturing
  • Forward fuselage preparation
  • Centre fuselage production
  • Rear fuselage integration
  • Systems validation
  • Structural integrity checks

Officials have also highlighted that indigenous systems and locally produced components are being increased significantly in the Mk2 platform.

Why HAL Tejas Mk2 Timeline Matters

The Tejas Mk2 project has seen multiple timeline revisions over the years because of:

  • Funding delays
  • Increased indigenisation goals
  • Engine supply issues
  • Complex systems integration requirements

Earlier projections had aimed for rollout between 2025 and 2026. However, the latest confirmation now places the formal rollout target in March 2027.

Expected Future Timeline

Based on current programme updates:

  • Prototype rollout: March 2027
  • Ground testing and taxi trials: After rollout
  • Maiden flight: Expected after testing phase
  • Operational clearance: Expected later in the decade
  • Production induction: Planned for future Indian Air Force requirements
