New Delhi: Indian Air Force (IAF) plans to procure additional Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) units to strengthen India’s multi-layered air defence network. The move is part of a broader strategy to counter evolving aerial threats such as stealth cruise missiles, drones, and precision-guided weapons.

Details of MRSAM Air Defence System Procurement

The Indian Air Force is considering the procurement of three to five additional squadrons of the Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) system to further strengthen ground-based air defence capabilities.

Currently, the IAF operates nine active MRSAM squadrons deployed at key strategic locations across the country. These units are tasked with protecting high-value assets such as air bases, radar installations, and critical infrastructure from aerial attacks.

Important air force bases like Jaisalmer and Adampur already rely on MRSAM units to provide quick interception capability against incoming enemy aircraft, missiles, or drones.

By expanding the number of squadrons, the Air Force aims to create a more robust air defence grid capable of responding quickly to emerging threats in different regions.

Why India Needs More Advanced Air Defence Systems

One of the key reasons behind this planned acquisition is the phasing out of older Soviet-era S-125 Pechora air defence systems that have been in service for decades.

Although these systems have undergone several upgrades, they are gradually becoming less effective against modern threats such as:

  • Precision-guided munitions
  • Stealth cruise missiles
  • Swarm drones
  • Advanced fighter aircraft

As warfare evolves with more advanced aerial technologies, India needs modern missile defence systems that can react faster and engage multiple targets simultaneously.

What is the MRSAM Air Defence System

The Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) system is a highly advanced air defence system jointly developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).

The system is manufactured in India with the participation of major defence companies such as:

  • Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL)
  • Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL)

The missile system is based on the Barak-8 missile platform, which is designed to intercept a wide range of aerial threats including aircraft, drones, helicopters, and missiles.

What are the Features of MRSAM Air Defence System

  • Interception range of 70–100 km in standard configuration
  • Ability to track and destroy multiple targets simultaneously
  • Advanced radar and command-and-control system
  • High mobility for rapid deployment

The system is considered one of the most important components of India’s modern air defence network.

Extended Range Version Under Consideration

To further improve operational capability, the Indian Air Force is also evaluating the Extended Range (ER) variant of the MRSAM system.

This upgraded version adds an additional booster stage, increasing the interception range to around 150 kilometres.

With such extended reach, the system can defend larger areas and neutralize threats much earlier, giving the military more time to respond to hostile attacks.

Role of MRSAM Air Defence System in Indian Multi-Layered Air Defence Strategy

The MRSAM system is expected to work as part of a multi-tier air defence network that combines different types of missile systems for comprehensive protection.

India’s layered defence structure typically includes:

  • Long-range systems such as the S-400
  • Medium-range interceptors like MRSAM
  • Short-range defence systems for point protection

By integrating these systems together, the armed forces can create overlapping layers of protection capable of stopping different types of aerial threats.

Integration with India’s Future Air Defence Network

The upcoming MRSAM units are expected to be integrated into “Mission Sudarshan Chakra,” a planned AI-enabled national air defence network that aims to connect sensors, radars, and weapon systems across the armed forces.

This network will enable:

  • Real-time data sharing
  • Faster decision-making
  • Rapid interception of hostile targets

Such integration will significantly reduce response time when enemy aircraft or missiles are detected.

Strategic Importance for India’s National Security

Modern conflicts around the world have demonstrated the growing importance of missile defence systems in protecting national airspace.

Systems like MRSAM play a crucial role in:

  • Countering drone attacks
  • Intercepting cruise missiles
  • Defending military bases
  • Protecting critical infrastructure

By expanding its MRSAM fleet, India aims to ensure a stronger air defence shield against future security challenges.
