New Delhi: India marked Vijay Diwas 2025 with solemn remembrance and renewed pride as the nation honoured the bravery, sacrifice, and unmatched valour of its Armed Forces

From wreath-laying ceremonies at the National War Memorial to the inauguration of Param Vir Dirgha at Rashtrapati Bhavan, the day stood as a powerful reminder of India’s historic military victory and the enduring spirit of its soldiers.

High-level tributes led by the President of India and the Raksha Mantri underlined the Armed Forces’ dominance on land, sea, and in the skies, reaffirming India’s military preparedness and national resolve.

What is Vijay Diwas

The 1971 Indo-Pakistan War was a decisive conflict fought between India and Pakistan in December 1971, leading to the creation of the independent nation of Bangladesh. The war was rooted in the political and humanitarian crisis in East Pakistan, where widespread repression and violence by the Pakistani military against the Bengali population triggered a massive refugee influx into India.

Tensions escalated as India extended diplomatic, humanitarian, and strategic support to the Bengali freedom movement, known as the Mukti Bahini. On December 3, 1971, Pakistan launched pre-emptive air strikes on Indian airfields in the western sector, formally initiating the war. India responded with full-scale military operations on both the eastern and western fronts.

In the Eastern Theatre, the Indian Armed Forces, in coordination with the Mukti Bahini, executed a swift and well-planned campaign that achieved air superiority within days. Indian Army formations advanced rapidly toward Dhaka, cutting off Pakistani supply lines and isolating enemy forces. Simultaneously, the Indian Navy imposed a naval blockade, preventing reinforcements and supplies from reaching East Pakistan.

Within just 13 days, the war concluded with the unconditional surrender of Pakistani forces in Dhaka on December 16, 1971. Over 93,000 Pakistani soldiers became prisoners of war—the largest military surrender since World War II. This victory resulted in the birth of Bangladesh as a sovereign nation.

The 1971 war stands as a landmark moment in Indian military history, demonstrating exceptional jointmanship between the Army, Navy, and Air Force, strategic planning, and decisive execution. It reshaped South Asia’s geopolitical landscape and is commemorated annually in India as Vijay Diwas, symbolising courage, sacrifice, and national pride.

The day symbolises:

  • Strategic military excellence
  • Seamless jointmanship of the Army, Navy, and Air Force
  • Supreme sacrifice of Indian soldiers
  • India’s emergence as a decisive regional power

Over five decades later, Vijay Diwas continues to inspire generations of Indians and serves as a cornerstone of India’s military heritage.
