Ranchi: The Jharkhand government is set to spend more than ₹100 crore to ensure tap water supply reaches every household in urban areas, especially those still left out of the existing pipeline network. The initiative aims to provide safe drinking water to all remaining urban settlements by the end of this year.
Major Push to Cover 3 Lakh Unconnected Urban Households
According to officials, while water pipelines have already been laid in several urban localities, newly developed colonies and fringe areas under municipal limits are still without proper water connections.
The new plan by the Urban Development Department and Drinking Water and Sanitation Department targets nearly 3 lakh remaining households. The state government will fund the project entirely from its own budget.
Municipal bodies have been directed to submit lists of uncovered areas so that pipeline expansion work can begin immediately.

Pipeline Expansion to Strengthen Future Water Supply Network
The government has also planned to extend the pipeline network beyond current coverage areas to meet future demand arising from urban growth. Once completed, households already connected will also receive improved and regular water supply.
Officials said the project is part of a long-term strategy to strengthen urban water infrastructure across Jharkhand.
AMRUT Scheme to Benefit 8 Lakh Additional Homes
The state is also implementing AMRUT-1, AMRUT-2, and the “Assured Water Supply” scheme. With adequate funding allocated this year, these projects are expected to benefit around 8 lakh new households once completed.
The central government has also sought preliminary reports for the next phase of expansion, indicating further scaling of the scheme in the future.
Water Quality Monitoring Strengthened During Monsoon
Ensuring clean drinking water remains a key challenge, especially during the monsoon season when groundwater contamination risks increase.
To address this, the Drinking Water Department has initiated district-level monitoring systems. Key measures include:
- Testing of groundwater and open water sources
- Distribution of water testing kits to local water workers
- Quick response system for contaminated water reports
- Alternative supply arrangements in affected areas
Focus on Safe and Sustainable Urban Water Supply
Officials emphasized that the government’s priority is not just water supply expansion but also ensuring safe and hygienic drinking water for all urban residents.
The ₹100+ crore initiative is expected to significantly improve urban water access and reduce dependence on unsafe water sources across Jharkhand’s cities and towns.
