Ranchi: The proposed Dhalbhumgarh Airport project in Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district has gained fresh momentum, with the state government moving ahead on a major expansion plan. The development proposal for a 540-acre airport site is set to be submitted to the Airports Authority of India (AAI), marking a significant step forward in strengthening regional air connectivity.
The project, which had remained delayed for years, is now progressing rapidly due to better coordination between the state government, district administration, and AAI.
State Government Pushes 540-Acre Airport Development Plan
The earlier plan for developing the airport over 240 acres has now been expanded to 540 acres, aiming to build a modern aviation facility capable of handling future passenger and operational demand.
According to officials, the revised proposal focuses on creating a fully equipped airport infrastructure that includes:
- Advanced passenger terminal
- Air Traffic Control (ATC) system
- Fire safety and emergency services
- Modern communication facilities
This expansion is expected to significantly improve aviation infrastructure in the region.
High-Level Meeting Accelerates Project Execution
A recent high-level meeting between the AAI Chairman, airport officials, and senior state government representatives led to key decisions regarding the project’s implementation.
The meeting resulted in a consensus to fast-track the planning process and enhance coordination between all agencies involved.
Officials also confirmed that AAI has found the proposed site technically suitable for airport operations, with no major operational obstacles identified.
Environmental and Land Clearance Process Underway
The project has entered an important phase involving land acquisition and environmental clearance.
Key developments include:
- Several villages have already provided No Objection Certificates (NOCs)
- Around 70,000 trees have been surveyed by the Forest Department
- Environmental clearance process has been forwarded to the central authorities
The government has also directed a revised survey of the elephant corridor area, as a large portion of the site falls under wildlife movement zones.
Policy Changes Remove Greenfield Airport Barrier
The project had earlier faced delays due to the Greenfield Airport Policy 2008, which mandates a minimum distance of 150 km between two airports.
Since the distance between Dhalbhumgarh and Birsa Munda Airport (Ranchi) is around 130–135 km, the project remained stalled.
However, the state government has now adjusted its strategy by accelerating development of a separate greenfield airport in Sahebganj, helping resolve the policy restriction and allowing progress at Dhalbhumgarh.
Improved Connectivity to Boost Regional Development
Once completed, the Dhalbhumgarh Airport is expected to significantly improve air connectivity for the Kolhan region, including Jamshedpur and nearby industrial areas.
Key benefits include:
- Reduced dependency on Ranchi and Kolkata airports
- Lower travel time and cost for passengers
- Boost to industrial logistics and investment
- Enhanced tourism and business activity
The airport is also expected to emerge as a major logistics hub supporting Jharkhand’s industrial growth.
Sahebganj Greenfield Airport Plan Also Progressing
Alongside Dhalbhumgarh, the state is also advancing plans for a Greenfield Airport in Sahebganj, which holds strategic importance due to its location near the Ganga river and a developing multi-modal port.
This airport is expected to provide direct air connectivity to the Santhal Pargana region and support trade, tourism, and transportation growth.
UDAN Scheme to Expand Air Connectivity in Jharkhand
Under the central government’s UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, several airports are planned across Jharkhand.
The expanded plan includes:
- Bokaro
- Dumka
- Jamshedpur
- Palamu (Chianki)
- Hazaribagh
- Sahebganj
The scheme aims to strengthen regional air connectivity and improve affordable air travel across India with an investment of ₹28,840 crore over the next decade.
Jharkhand Set for Major Aviation Infrastructure Growth
With renewed government focus and coordination between AAI and state authorities, the Dhalbhumgarh Airport project is now back on track. The expansion to 540 acres, along with parallel airport developments in Sahebganj and other regions, signals a major transformation in Jharkhand’s aviation infrastructure landscape.
If executed on schedule, these projects are expected to significantly boost economic development, connectivity, and industrial growth across the state.
