New Delhi: The National Lok Adalat 2026 is being organised across India today by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). The mega legal settlement drive aims to provide fast, affordable, and amicable resolution of disputes while reducing the burden on courts.

According to official information shared by NALSA, a wide range of pending and pre-litigation cases will be taken up during the second National Lok Adalat of 2026.

What is National Lok Adalat?

National Lok Adalat is a people-centric dispute resolution mechanism conducted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. It helps settle cases through mutual agreement without lengthy court procedures. Awards passed in Lok Adalats are legally binding and treated as decrees of civil courts.

NALSA, along with State Legal Services Authorities and District Legal Services Authorities, conducts these Lok Adalats regularly across the country.

Cases Likely to Be Taken Up in National Lok Adalat

According to official sources, the following matters may be resolved during the National Lok Adalat:

  • Criminal compoundable cases
  • Cheque bounce cases under the Negotiable Instruments Act
  • Bank recovery matters
  • Motor accident claim cases
  • Family disputes and matrimonial matters
  • Labour and employment disputes
  • Electricity and water bill disputes
  • Traffic challan settlements
  • Land and property disputes
  • Pre-litigation settlement cases

Officials said the process focuses on compromise and speedy settlement between both parties.

NALSA Says Lok Adalat Reduces Court Burden

Speaking to Akashvani News, NALSA Member Secretary Sanjeev Pandey said the initiative is aimed at providing amicable settlement of disputes using participatory and people-friendly mechanisms.

He also stated that from 2023 to 2025, around 12 National Lok Adalats were organised across the country and nearly 26 crore cases were disposed of through this system.

Why Lok Adalat is Important

Lok Adalats are considered an important alternative dispute resolution system in India because:

  • Cases are settled quickly
  • Court fees are not charged
  • Previously paid court fees can be refunded after settlement
  • Parties avoid long legal battles
  • Decisions are final and binding
  • The system reduces pressure on courts

The official NALSA website states that Lok Adalat members act as conciliators and encourage both sides to settle disputes peacefully.

National Lok Adalat 2026 Schedule

As per the official National Lok Adalat calendar for 2026, four National Lok Adalats are scheduled this year:

  • 14 March 2026
  • 9 May 2026
  • 12 September 2026
  • 12 December 2026

The second National Lok Adalat is being held today, 9 May 2026, across most states and union territories.

Several States Conduct Awareness Campaigns

Before today’s Lok Adalat, many states launched awareness drives, rallies, and publicity campaigns to encourage citizens to participate. Courts and legal services authorities informed people about settlement opportunities related to pending disputes and traffic challans.

Reports also suggested that lakhs of cases have already been listed for hearing during today’s National Lok Adalat.

How Citizens Can Benefit

People with pending disputes or pre-litigation matters can approach their nearest District Legal Services Authority, court complex, or legal aid centre to participate in Lok Adalat proceedings.

Benefits include:

  • Faster dispute resolution
  • Reduced legal expenses
  • Simplified settlement process
  • Mutual agreement-based outcomes
  • No lengthy court hearings

Citizens can also check updates through the official NALSA website and respective State Legal Services Authority portals.
