The Karnataka government has revoked the suspension of senior IPS officer K Ramachandra Rao and reinstated him into service with immediate effect, just weeks before his retirement. Following his reinstatement, the 1993-batch IPS officer has been posted as Director General of Police (Police Manual).
The decision came on Tuesday, a day before his birthday and less than a month ahead of his scheduled retirement at the end of May.
Government Issues Reinstatement Order
The Karnataka government issued an official order on Wednesday evening revoking Rao’s suspension under the provisions of the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969.

According to the order:
“The Government of Karnataka, in exercise of the powers conferred under Rule-3(7)(c) of AIS (D&A) Rules, 1969, hereby revokes the order of suspension and reinstates Dr. K Ramachandra Rao, IPS (KN:1993) into service with immediate effect.”
The order further stated that he has been posted as Director General of Police (Police Manual) until further instructions.
Suspension Followed Viral Video Controversy
Rao was suspended on January 19, 2026, while serving as Director General of Police, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement (DCRE), after videos allegedly showing him in compromising positions with women surfaced on social media.
The controversy intensified after one of the videos purportedly showed Rao engaging in inappropriate physical contact with a woman during his tenure as Inspector General of Police (IGP), Northern Range, in 2017.
Disciplinary Proceedings Initiated in March
The state government had initiated formal disciplinary proceedings against the IPS officer on March 18, 2026, under the All India Services disciplinary framework.
Despite the ongoing proceedings, the government has now decided to revoke the suspension and restore him to service before his retirement.
Retirement Scheduled Later This Month
Rao is scheduled to retire from service on May 30/31, 2026, marking the end of a long career in the Karnataka cadre of the Indian Police Service.
The reinstatement comes barely three weeks before his superannuation.
Disciplinary Proceedings
The Karnataka government’s decision to revoke the suspension of senior IPS officer K Ramachandra Rao has drawn attention due to the timing and the controversy surrounding the case. While disciplinary proceedings had already been initiated following the emergence of viral videos earlier this year, the officer has now been reinstated and assigned a fresh posting shortly before retirement.
