Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh has taken a major leap in India’s renewable energy transition with the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a unique 440 MW Morena Solar Plus Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project. The initiative has been described as “epoch-making” by Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav and is being hailed as one of the most competitive renewable energy deals in the country.
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Prahlad Joshi also praised the project, stating that Madhya Pradesh is setting new benchmarks in clean energy innovation and rapidly outperforming other states in the sector.
Record-Low Tariff of ₹2.70 Per Unit Achieved
A key highlight of the Morena solar-plus-storage project is its historically low tariff of ₹2.70 per unit, reportedly the lowest in India for this category of projects.
The competitive bidding process saw participation from 16 leading domestic and international companies and continued for nearly 12 hours before finalizing the winning tariff. The state government stated that this price is below previous national benchmarks for similar integrated solar-storage projects.

Innovative Battery Storage Model with Dual Daily Usage
One of the most significant technological innovations of the project is its advanced battery usage model. The system is designed so that a single battery asset can be used twice per day, significantly improving utilization efficiency.
This approach:
- Increases asset productivity
- Reduces overall storage costs
- Enhances economic viability of solar power integration
- Supports reliable round-the-clock renewable energy supply
Officials described this as a breakthrough in making battery energy storage commercially scalable in India.
Nearly 1 GW Renewable Energy Dedicated Alongside Major Solar Parks
Along with the Morena project, Madhya Pradesh also commissioned nearly 950 MW of solar capacity through:
- 500 MW Neemuch Solar Park
- 450 MW Shajapur Solar Park
These additions bring the state close to the 1 GW renewable energy milestone.
Earlier initiatives such as the Rewa Solar Project and ASN (Agar-Shajapur-Neemuch) Solar Project have already positioned Madhya Pradesh as a key supplier of clean electricity to national infrastructure systems like Indian Railways and Delhi Metro.
Madhya Pradesh Emerging as a Renewable Energy Investment Hub
The state is rapidly establishing itself as a leading destination for renewable energy investments in India. The government highlighted that Madhya Pradesh is no longer focusing only on generation capacity but is now prioritizing:
- Energy storage integration
- Reliable power supply systems
- Cost-efficient renewable deployment
- Investor-friendly policies and faster approvals
The Energy Department has streamlined land allocation, approvals, and inter-departmental coordination to accelerate project execution.
Large-Scale Renewable Expansion and Storage Roadmap
Madhya Pradesh has already initiated major steps toward grid stability and energy storage integration:
- 4-hour and 6-hour storage-based renewable tenders issued
- Preparations underway for India’s first 24×7 round-the-clock renewable energy project
- Strong industry response to upcoming renewable storage bids
A pre-bid meeting for the next major phase is scheduled for July 1, 2026.
₹2.40/Unit Feeder Solarization Project to Boost Rural Supply
In another major achievement, the state’s 4,022 MW feeder solarization program achieved a record tariff of ₹2.40 per unit.
This initiative is expected to:
- Provide daytime electricity to farmers
- Improve rural power reliability
- Enhance agricultural productivity
- Reduce dependency on conventional grid supply during peak demand hours
Toward 20 GW Clean Energy Capacity Target
The state government has set an ambitious target of developing over 20,000 MW of additional renewable energy capacity in the coming years.
Current and planned developments include:
- Solar energy parks
- Wind power expansion
- Battery energy storage systems
- Pumped hydro storage projects
Officials emphasized that Madhya Pradesh is moving toward becoming India’s “Green Energy Capital.”
Clean Energy Supporting Employment and Infrastructure Growth
Government statements highlighted that renewable energy projects are not only contributing to clean electricity generation but are also:
- Creating local employment opportunities
- Boosting infrastructure development
- Driving regional economic activity
- Strengthening industrial participation through major developers like NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd, Tata Power, and Waaree Energies
Vision for Energy Security and Developed India 2047
The Madhya Pradesh government stated that its renewable energy strategy aligns with India’s long-term vision of energy security and “Viksit Bharat 2047.”
With its focus on energy storage, solar expansion, and innovative bidding models, the state aims to ensure:
- Affordable electricity
- 24×7 reliable power supply
- Sustainable industrial growth
- Reduced carbon emissions
The Morena 440 MW Solar + Battery Storage project marks a transformative milestone in India’s renewable energy journey. With record-low tariffs, innovative storage technology, and large-scale solar expansion, Madhya Pradesh is positioning itself as a national leader in clean energy innovation and investment.
The project not only strengthens India’s renewable energy infrastructure but also signals a shift toward more reliable, storage-backed green power systems for the future.
