Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) has taken a significant stride towards renewable energy by entering into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL) on July 3. The agreement aims to install an additional 250 MW of Solar Power capacity in the Sonbhadra region.
The MoU, signed by NCL’s Director (Technical/Project & Planning) Sunil Prasad Singh and UPRVUNL’s Director (Technical) Ashwini Kumar Tripathi, outlines plans for a 100 MW floating Solar Power Plant and a 150 MW Ground Mounted Solar Power Plant.
NCL’s Chairman and Managing Director B Sairam reaffirmed the company’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions and embracing renewable energy for sustainable mining practices. He highlighted that this initiative aligns with Coal India’s and the Ministry of Coal’s objectives, emphasizing NCL’s dedication to reducing carbon footprints and promoting green energy in accordance with national goals.
Previously, NCL successfully commissioned a 50 MW Ground Mounted Solar Power Plant in its Nigahi Area, Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh, furthering its path towards becoming a net-zero company. NCL, a Miniratna PSU under the Ministry of Coal, operates ten highly mechanized open-cast coal mines in Singrauli and Sonbhadra Districts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, producing over 135 million tonnes of coal annually.
This initiative marks a pivotal moment in NCL’s journey towards sustainability and reinforces its role in India’s renewable energy landscape.
