New Delhi: A 20-member mountaineering team from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS), Dirang, has completed a first-ascent expedition involving the summit of 20 unclimbed peaks above 6,000 metres in Ladakh within 23 days.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh flagged in the expedition team at Kartavya Bhavan-2 in New Delhi on Friday following the expedition, which covered high-altitude areas of the Ladakh Range.
First Recorded Ascents of 20 Peaks
The expedition marked the first recorded summits of 20 unclimbed peaks in the Chamser-Lungser, Gyama Nala and Chokula areas of Ladakh, according to the Ministry of Defence.

The team was led by Colonel Ranveer Singh Jamwal and comprised 20 trained climbers from NIMAS.
Expedition Completed in 23 Days
The team completed the ascents in 23 days, with the expedition involving high-altitude climbing across previously unclimbed terrain.
According to the Defence Ministry, the expedition involved planning, technical mountaineering skills, endurance and coordinated team operations.
The expedition was organised with the objective of promoting adventure and exploration in high-altitude frontier areas and encouraging mountaineering among younger generations.
Rajnath Singh Flags In Expedition Team
Interacting with the climbers, Rajnath Singh commended their determination and described the achievement as a demonstration of India’s capabilities in mountaineering and adventure sports.
He said the successful ascents would encourage young mountaineers to pursue adventure and exploration.
The Defence Minister also highlighted the expedition’s contribution to India’s presence in high-altitude mountaineering.
NIMAS Team and Defence Officials Attend Ceremony
The expedition was undertaken by NIMAS, Dirang, an institute associated with mountaineering and adventure sports training.
Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and senior officials of the Ministry of Defence were present at the flag-in ceremony in New Delhi.
