New Delhi: Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Ship Shaunak sailed from Chennai for Perth, Australia, on September 25 as part of the QUAD-at-Sea Ship Observer Mission, bringing personnel from India, Australia, Japan and the United States together for professional exchanges at sea.
The mission is aimed at strengthening maritime cooperation, interoperability and coordination among the four QUAD countries.
Six Officers Join Shaunak for Mission
Six Sea Riders embarked on board ICG Ship Shaunak for the mission.
The group comprises:
- Two officers from India
- Two officers from Japan
- One officer from Australia
- One officer from the United States

The participating officers will take part in shipboard activities and professional interactions during the voyage.
Mission Focuses on Maritime Interoperability
The ship observer mission is designed to provide participating personnel with opportunities for professional exchanges and coordinated activities at sea.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the engagement is intended to strengthen interoperability, coordination and mutual trust among the maritime forces of the four QUAD countries.
The initiative is aligned with the QUAD Foreign Ministers’ Joint Statement of May 26, 2026, which reaffirmed the participating countries’ commitment to a free, open, inclusive and rules-based maritime order in the Indo-Pacific.
ICG Links Mission to MAHASAGAR Vision
The mission also reflects India’s MAHASAGAR vision — Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.
The Indian Coast Guard said the initiative reinforces its focus on collective engagement, professional linkages and maritime security cooperation across the Indo-Pacific.
The voyage to Perth marks another maritime engagement involving the four QUAD countries, with the ship observer mission providing a platform for personnel from the participating nations to work alongside one another and exchange operational experience.
