NTPC Limited, a Maharatna PSU and India’s largest power utility, has established a new subsidiary, NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam Limited (NPUNL), to focus exclusively on the nuclear energy sector. In a regulatory filing on Tuesday, NTPC announced that NPUNL was incorporated on January 7, 2025, as a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC Limited.
The primary objective of NPUNL is to undertake nuclear energy projects, including planning, developing, and operating nuclear power facilities for electricity generation and other purposes. NTPC stated, “The company aims to build, own, operate, and manage nuclear energy projects, promote research and development, and select suitable sites for nuclear power stations and ancillary facilities.”
This marks NTPC’s first wholly-owned subsidiary dedicated to nuclear energy. The establishment of NPUNL follows approvals from the Ministry of Power, DIPAM, and NITI Aayog in September 2024.
In addition to NPUNL, NTPC had earlier partnered with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to form a joint venture company, Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Ltd (ASHVINI), also focusing on nuclear energy projects.
NTPC has ambitious plans to invest Rs. 3-4 lakh crore over the next 23 years to add approximately 20 GW of nuclear power capacity. This move aligns with NTPC’s strategy to diversify its energy portfolio and contribute to India’s clean energy goals.
