On Wednesday, Jakson Green announced that it has secured a contract from NTPC Limited, a state-owned entity, to establish a plant for producing 4G ethanol from flue gas.

The upcoming facility, located in Lara, Chhattisgarh, will produce 10 tonnes per day (TPD) of 4G ethanol using flue gases emitted from power plants, according to a company statement.

The plant will utilize advanced carbon capture technology developed by Veolia Carbon Clean, which will capture 25 TPD of CO2 from flue gases, thereby significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Additionally, the facility will generate 3 TPD of green hydrogen through a 7.5 MW electrolyser. The captured CO2 and produced hydrogen will be combined using advanced microbial fermentation technology from LanzaTech Inc. to convert these inputs into 4G ethanol.

Jakson Green has been entrusted with a pivotal role in this pioneering project, which aims to establish the world’s first power plant-based flue gas CO2-to-4G ethanol production facility. As the licensing, engineering, procurement, and construction (LEPC) partner, Jakson Green will lead this project, which is slated to commence operations within two years.

The plant was conceptualized and designed by NETRA (NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance), the R&D wing of NTPC Ltd.

Kannan Krishnan, Joint Managing Director of Jakson Green Private Limited, stated, “This partnership builds upon the success of our numerous joint projects… Increasing the production of ethanol is crucial to achieving India’s blending goals, strengthening energy security, and fostering a cleaner future.”

With a production capacity exceeding 8,500 tonnes per annum of green hydrogen and its derivatives under development across six projects, Jakson Green is strategically positioned to lead India’s clean energy transition and contribute to a sustainable future.
