Chandigarh: To ensure free, fair and peaceful conduct of the upcoming municipal elections, the State Election Commission Punjab (SEC) has appointed IAS and senior PCS officers as General Observers in all 23 districts of Punjab.
The Municipal General Elections for 8 Municipal Corporations, 76 Municipal Councils and 21 Nagar Panchayats – a total of 105 urban local bodies – are scheduled to be held on May 26, 2026 (Tuesday).
The elections are being closely watched as a major political test for all key parties, including the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Indian National Congress, and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), ahead of the next Punjab Assembly elections.
General Observers Appointed for All 23 Districts
The SEC said the deployment of senior officers is an additional safeguard to strengthen election monitoring and maintain transparency throughout the polling process.

The observers will oversee preparations and conduct of the elections in their assigned districts and report directly to the Commission.
