Chandigarh: The Punjab government has launched a new initiative titled “Nikke Kadam, Vadda Vikas” (Small Steps, Big Development) under the Punjab Child Development Conclave 2026, focusing on improving early childhood care, nutrition, and learning outcomes during the crucial first 1,000 days of a child’s life.
The campaign was announced by Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Baljit Kaur, who emphasized the importance of early intervention in shaping a child’s physical, cognitive, and emotional growth.
First 1,000 Days Crucial for Child Development
Minister Baljit Kaur said that the period from conception to the age of two is the most critical phase in a child’s development. She stated that the initiative aims to ensure every child receives:
- Proper nutrition
- Responsive caregiving
- Age-appropriate stimulation
- Strong foundation for lifelong learning and health
The program is designed to improve overall child development outcomes across Punjab through structured community-based interventions.
Development Report Cards for Young Children
As part of the initiative, parents of children up to the age of three years will receive development report cards. These cards will help track key physical and developmental milestones and allow parents to better understand their child’s growth progress.
Anganwadi workers will play a central role by:
- Conducting monthly home visits
- Guiding parents on age-specific developmental activities
- Promoting play-based learning using illustrated materials
Strengthening Anganwadi System Through Training
The state government has also enhanced early childhood education by training 27,307 anganwadi workers under the Aadharshila-based curriculum.
This training equips workers to:
- Deliver activity-based pre-school education
- Prepare children for formal schooling
- Improve foundational learning outcomes
Officials said this will significantly strengthen the quality of early education across the state.
Mission Aarambh Sees Strong Participation
Highlighting the success of ‘Mission Aarambh’, Minister Kaur said that nearly 1.6 lakh parents from all 23 districts have joined a WhatsApp-based home-learning program.
The initiative is supported by over 26,000 anganwadi workers, ensuring continuous engagement between families and the child development system.
Massive Parental Involvement in Early Education
The minister also shared participation data from Early Childhood Care and Education activities:
- 15.59 lakh parents participated in ECCE Day (2025–26)
- This included 4.83 lakh fathers, showing increased male involvement in parenting
- Growing awareness and engagement in early childhood learning across Punjab
Focus on Holistic Child Development
Officials said the campaign is designed to promote holistic child development by combining nutrition, education, healthcare, and parental awareness. The government aims to build a strong foundation for lifelong learning and well-being.
With the launch of ‘Nikke Kadam, Vadda Vikas’, Punjab is focusing on strengthening early childhood development through structured community engagement, trained frontline workers, and active parental participation. The initiative highlights the state’s commitment to ensuring better health, learning, and growth outcomes for every child.
