New Delhi: Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Railways, has emerged as the Lowest Bidder (L1) for a ₹967.93 crore EPC railway infrastructure project awarded by East Coast Railway. The project is part of RVNL’s normal course of business and focuses on expanding rail capacity along a key corridor in Odisha.
Project Overview: 385 Km Rail Expansion on Bhadrak–Vizianagaram Section
The project involves the construction of third and fourth railway lines across two major sections:
- Nergundi–Barang (22 km)
- Khurda Road–Vizianagaram (363 km)
Together, the development covers approximately 385 km of rail network expansion on the Bhadrak–Vizianagaram route.
The total contract value stands at ₹967.93 crore (including GST), with an execution timeline of three years.
Major Bridge Construction Across Key Rivers in Odisha
A key component of the project includes the construction of four Open Web Steel Girder railway bridges over major rivers:
- Bridge No. 539 over River Birupa
- Bridge No. 544 over River Mahanadi
- Bridge No. 553 over River Kathjori
- Bridge No. 557 over River Kuakhai
These bridges will play a crucial role in ensuring uninterrupted rail connectivity across challenging river crossings in the region.
EPC Execution Model and Project Scope
The project will be executed under the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) model and includes:
- Construction of third and fourth railway lines
- Fabrication and installation of major steel girder bridges
- Integration with existing railway infrastructure
- Completion within a three-year timeframe
The contract has been awarded by a domestic entity and does not involve any related party transactions or promoter group interest.
Strengthening Rail Capacity in Eastern India
The Bhadrak–Vizianagaram corridor is a strategically important railway route in eastern India. The project is expected to:
- Increase rail line capacity
- Improve traffic flow and operational efficiency
- Reduce congestion on existing routes
- Enhance freight and passenger movement
This expansion aligns with Indian Railways’ broader focus on upgrading high-density corridors.
RVNL Continues Strong Infrastructure Order Momentum
The company stated that the order has been received in the normal course of business and reflects its continued success in competitive bidding for large-scale railway infrastructure projects across India.
