New Delhi: State-owned infrastructure company Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has received a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) worth ₹967.93 crore from the East Coast Railway for the construction of four major bridges on the Bhadrak–Vizianagaram railway section. The project is aimed at strengthening rail capacity and improving connectivity on one of eastern India’s busiest rail corridors.
Major EPC Contract for Key Railway Corridor
The contract has been awarded by East Coast Railway under a large-scale infrastructure expansion programme involving third and fourth railway lines between:
- Nergundi–Barang section
- Khurda Road–Vizianagaram section
- Bhadrak–Vizianagaram corridor in Odisha
The project will be executed on an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) basis.
Construction of Four Major Steel Girder Bridges
The scope of work includes construction of four critical open-web steel girder bridges over major rivers in Odisha:
- Bridge No. 539 over Birupa River
- Bridge No. 544 over Mahanadi River
- Bridge No. 553 over Kathjori River
- Bridge No. 557 over Kuakhai River
These structures will play a key role in supporting third and fourth line expansion and improving traffic flow across the corridor.
Project Cost and Timeline
According to the company’s regulatory filing:
- Total project value: ₹967,92,66,661.70 (including 18% GST)
- Completion timeline: 1,095 days (approximately 3 years)
The project is expected to significantly enhance both passenger and freight movement efficiency along the route.
Strategic Importance for Eastern India Rail Network
The Bhadrak–Vizianagaram section is a crucial railway route under the East Coast network, handling heavy freight and passenger traffic. The addition of third and fourth lines, along with the new bridges, is expected to:
- Reduce congestion on existing lines
