Agartala: Tripura Police has organised a free eye screening camp for commercial vehicle drivers as part of its ongoing road safety initiative aimed at reducing accidents and improving road safety standards across the state.
The programme was conducted by the Traffic Department under the community policing initiative Prayas, focusing on preventive healthcare and ensuring that drivers operating commercial vehicles have proper vision and access to necessary medical support.
Tripura Police Focuses on Reducing Road Accidents
Addressing the programme, Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag, IPS, said reducing road accidents continues to be one of the top priorities of Tripura Police.
He highlighted that the state has witnessed a decline in road accidents, with cases reducing from around 578 in 2024 to 527 in 2025. The DGP credited this improvement to the department’s integrated road safety strategy based on the four Es — Education, Enforcement, Emergency Care, and Engineering.
“The reduction in accidents has been possible because all stakeholders are working together on these four key areas. We have achieved encouraging results, and we will continue strengthening these efforts,” the DGP said.
Free Eye Check-Ups and Spectacles for Commercial Drivers
The eye screening camp was organised considering the challenges faced by commercial drivers, many of whom find it difficult to visit hospitals due to time constraints and financial limitations.
During the camp, drivers received free eye examinations, and those requiring corrective vision support will be provided spectacles free of cost.
DGP Anurag stated that the entire cost of the initiative is being covered by the Traffic Office and the Prayas community policing programme, ensuring that drivers can access essential healthcare without financial burden.
Drivers Appreciate Road Safety Health Initiative
Commercial vehicle drivers who benefited from the camp welcomed the initiative and appreciated Tripura Police for organising the programme.
One of the drivers, Sukoon Mian, said the free eye examination was a valuable service for commercial drivers and praised the Traffic Department for taking such a supportive step towards driver welfare and road safety.
Part of Tripura Police’s Wider Road Safety Campaign
The eye screening programme is part of Tripura Police’s broader road safety campaign focused on preventing accidents through healthcare support, public awareness, and effective enforcement measures.
By addressing health-related factors among drivers, the initiative aims to create safer road conditions and encourage responsible driving practices across the state.
Tripura Police has reiterated its commitment to working with communities and stakeholders to strengthen road safety measures and reduce accident risks in the future.
