Lucknow: In a major push to strengthen counter-terror capabilities, Rajeev Krishna, an IPS officer of 1991 batch from UP cadre and Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh, has called for advanced commando training of global standards and cutting-edge technological upgrades for the state’s Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS).
The directive came during a comprehensive inspection of the ATS headquarters, where the DGP reviewed operational preparedness and emphasised the need to equip personnel to deal with evolving and technology-driven security threats.
Focus on Technology-Driven Policing
Highlighting the changing nature of terrorism, Rajeev Krishna noted that modern threats are increasingly driven by technology, requiring a shift toward real-time intelligence and digital surveillance.
He directed ATS units to adopt:
- Advanced data analytics systems
- AI-enabled monitoring tools
- Integrated surveillance platforms
These technologies will help track suspicious activities, particularly across social media platforms and encrypted communication channels, where terror networks are increasingly operating.

Strengthening Cyber and Intelligence Infrastructure
Officials briefed the DGP on the induction of modern equipment under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. This includes upgrades in:
- Cyber monitoring infrastructure
- Digital forensics capabilities
- Intelligence coordination systems
The DGP stressed that seamless coordination between field units and central intelligence agencies must be ensured through secure, technology-driven communication networks.
Push for Global-Standard Commando Training
A key highlight of the review was the emphasis on capacity building through a structured and intensive training ecosystem for ATS commandos.
Rajeev Krishna called for:
- High-intensity, specialised training modules
- Regular mock drills simulating real-life terror scenarios
- Training in hostage rescue, urban warfare, and IED neutralisation
He also directed that ATS personnel undergo advanced training in collaboration with elite institutions such as the National Security Guard (NSG).
Institutionalising Mock Drills and Real-Time Response
The DGP stressed the importance of institutionalising mock drills to improve response time and tactical precision. These drills will simulate:
- Hostage crises
- Urban combat situations
- Improvised explosive device (IED) threats
Such exercises are expected to significantly enhance operational readiness and ensure faster, more coordinated responses during real incidents.
Upgrading Infrastructure to Global Standards
During the inspection, Rajeev Krishna also reviewed the existing training infrastructure at the ATS headquarters. He directed officials to continuously upgrade facilities to align with global standards.
The focus will be on creating a modern, well-equipped training environment capable of supporting advanced tactical and technological learning.
Enhancing Operational Effectiveness
The DGP underlined the need for exposure to both national and international best practices in counter-terrorism. By integrating advanced training with cutting-edge technology, the ATS is expected to significantly enhance its operational effectiveness.
Efficiency
With terrorism evolving rapidly in the digital age, Uttar Pradesh Police is gearing up to modernise its approach through technology and elite training. The DGP’s directives signal a strong commitment to building a future-ready ATS capable of tackling complex security challenges with precision and efficiency.
