New Delhi: In a major step towards structured urban expansion, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) has initiated the process to grant urban status to 48 villages across the national capital. The proposal has been approved by the MCD Standing Committee, marking a key milestone in Delhi’s planned development.
Approval Under Delhi Master Plan 2041
The decision has been taken in line with the Delhi Master Plan 2041, which aims to ensure balanced and sustainable urban growth across the city.
While the proposal has received approval at the committee level, it still requires clearance from:
- MCD House
- Delhi Government
- Central Government
Once approved, an official notification will be issued to formally include these villages under urban jurisdiction.
Infrastructure Boost Expected After Urban Tag
After receiving urban status, these villages are expected to see a significant upgrade in civic infrastructure, including:
- Improved roads and connectivity
- Expanded sewer and drainage systems
- Reliable drinking water supply
- Better street lighting
- Modern waste management systems
Officials said the move will enable planned development and faster infrastructure execution in these areas.
Spread Across Multiple Districts of Delhi
The 48 villages are spread across several districts of Delhi, including:
- Outer North Delhi
- North Delhi
- South Delhi
- South-East Delhi
- North-East Delhi
- North-West Delhi
- South-West Delhi
These regions have already witnessed increasing urban activity, making formal inclusion into the city’s urban framework a logical step.
Step Towards Managing Rapid Urbanization
The decision is expected to help Delhi manage its rapid and unplanned urban expansion more effectively. Authorities believe that bringing these villages under urban governance will improve administrative efficiency and service delivery.
Once fully approved, the initiative by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will mark a significant transformation in Delhi’s urban landscape, ensuring better infrastructure, improved civic services, and more organized city growth under the Delhi Master Plan 2041.
