New Delhi: In a major push to ensure uninterrupted water supply during the summer season, the Delhi government has strengthened its water management strategy under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. A high-level review meeting with the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) outlined key decisions aimed at improving supply, transparency, and water conservation across the city.
1314 MGD Additional Water Supply to Meet Rising Demand
Officials informed that the Delhi Jal Board has enhanced water supply capacity to 1314 million gallons per day (MGD) for 2025–26.
Key infrastructure upgrades include:
- Around 430 new tubewells installed in South Delhi
- 60 high-capacity tubewells activated in Palla region
- Direct water supply improvements for areas like Narela and Badli

Fast-Tracking Dwarka Water Treatment Plant Project
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta directed officials to expedite the commissioning of the second 50 MGD water treatment plant in Dwarka.
She also instructed the preparation of a detailed roadmap for new water treatment plants in water-stressed areas of South and South-West Delhi.
Additionally, all existing treatment plants have been asked to operate at full capacity with continuous water quality monitoring.
GPS Tracking for Water Tankers to Improve Transparency
To ensure accountability in water distribution, the government has ordered the development of a GPS-enabled driver application for water tankers.
This system will:
- Track real-time tanker movement
- Record delivery locations
- Improve transparency in water distribution
Officials said this step will help reduce irregularities and improve efficiency in tanker supply operations.
Mandatory Rainwater Harvesting Across Delhi
The government has made rainwater harvesting mandatory across residential, commercial, and institutional properties.
Under the “Catch the Rain” initiative:
- Schools, colleges, and institutions will install harvesting systems
- Private and government properties must comply
- Borewell NOC approval will require a functioning rainwater harvesting system
- Annual inspections will be conducted by DJB in government buildings
The move aims to improve groundwater levels and promote water conservation.
Focus on Long-Term Water Security
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stressed that ensuring uninterrupted water supply during summers is a top priority. She directed officials to complete all ongoing projects within deadlines and strengthen long-term water infrastructure planning.
With enhanced supply capacity, stricter monitoring systems, and mandatory conservation measures, the Delhi government is aiming to create a more reliable and transparent water distribution system. The initiatives are expected to significantly reduce water shortages and improve groundwater sustainability in the coming years.
